Dr Paul Levi (2021)

Having graduated in dentistry in 1961 from the prestigious University of Tufts (Boston), Paul Levi went on to specialise in periodontics under the supervision of international leading practitioner Irvin Glickman. Levi has dedicated his entire professional, teaching and research career to this field.

For all dentists and health professionals, Paul Levi has been a visionary who in the 1960s was already demonstrating the close link between oral health and the population’s general health, and the great importance of treating patients from a global and holistic perspective.

Alongside his work in healthcare, teaching has been another of Levi's great passions. Following his work as a teacher with the U.S. Navy, where he taught recruits about oral health, Paul Levi has trained, mentored and inspired countless dentists around the world, instilling in all of them the great responsibility and commitment to help people maintain good health.

Levi currently teaches at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (both in Boston), as well as at the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Dentistry, since 2010. He has collaborated with several other universities across Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Paul Levi's commitment to continuous improvement within the field of periodontics, both in terms of care and teaching, led him to be director of the American Board of Periodontology, an organisation tasked with examining and guaranteeing the scientific quality of the field of periodontology in the United States, and president of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of oral health.

His research has focused on two key areas:

  • Contributing to the knowledge of the conditioning factors for improving oral health and, specifically, in the area of periodontics and implants.
  • Teaching innovation to convey to future dentists the importance of overall patient care and the promotion of oral health in order to guarantee good overall health.

Throughout his career, Levi has published several scientific papers and books, including:

  • The Non-Surgical Control of Periodontal Diseases: A Comprehensive Handbook
  • Clinical Cases in Implant Therapy:
  1. The use of systemic antibiotics in implant placement
  2. The use of local delivery antibiotics in the treatment of peri-implant Mucositis
  3. The patients’ plaque control therapy for maintaining implants
  4. The clinicians’ hygiene therapy for maintaining implants
