Cinema

Through a selection of films covering different genres and styles, the group will examine the plot, soundtrack, making of and the most iconic scenes, and reflect at length on the messages the films convey.

The sessions are organised as follows: they will begin with a brief introduction to the film by the group coordinators. Then, after watching the film, participants are invited to make comments and share their impressions.

The coordinators, on our Barcelona Campus, are Oscar Sueiro, the Digital Media Studios (DMS) technician, and Geoffrey Cowper, a film director who is also a lecturer in the Faculty of Communication Sciences. Both are regular contributors to film festivals and magazines.

All films will be screened in their original language, with subtitles.

"12 Angry Men", Sidney Lumet, 1957

Law Degree Special

"12 Angry Men" is considered one of the greatest debut films in the history of the cinema. Directed by Sidney Lumet, who went on to prove himself as a great screenwriter, as well as a cinema theorist, it tells the story of a people’s jury who must deliberate on the conviction or acquittal of a defendant in a murder trial. Guilty or innocent? A young man’s life is hanging on the decision. Everyone believes he is guilty until through Henry Fonda, the main character, reasonable doubt emerges that will change the course of the deliberation.

A brilliant film at all levels that draws you in from the very start.

Based on the play written by Reginald Rose, the film won four Academy Award nominations.
