Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.

The Bachelor’s Thesis course shall provide the student with the needed experience and knowledge for carrying out the protocol of an evidence-based research project.

Pre-course requirements

In orther to  be able to do the end of degree Presentation,   The student must have passed all of the subjects of the first three years of the programme and 80% of the subjects of the fourth year. and obviously  he must have passed the End of degree paper.

Objectives

At the end of their bachelor’s studies, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge they have acquired during the degree programme regarding a given topic, providing specific evidence-based detail through the development of a research project under the basic research lines established.

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • 21 - Knowing how to undertake a full dental exam, including the necessary X-ray and complementary exploratory tests, as well as obtaining suitable clinical references.
  • 11 - Understanding the basic biomedical science Dentistry is based on in order to ensure that adequate dental healthcare is provided.
  • 12 - Understanding and recognising the structure and normal function of the stomatognathic apparatus, at a molecular, cellular, tissue and organic level, during the various stages of life.
  • 13 - Understanding and recognising the science behind the essential bio-materials involved in dental practice as well as immediately managing potential allergies to these.
  • 14 - Being aware of the general processes of the illness, including infection, inflammation, alterations in the immune system, degeneration, neoplasm, metabolic alterations and genetic disorders.
  • 15 - Being familiar with the general pathological characteristics of the illnesses and disorders that affect organic systems, specifically those which have dental repercussions.
  • 16 - Understanding the fundamental basis of actions, instructions and the efficiency of medicines and other healthcare interventions, knowing what their side-effects, interactions, systemic effects and interactions with other organs are, based on the scientific knowledge available.
  • 01 - Being aware of the essential elements of the dental profession, including the ethical principles and legal responsibilities it involves.
  • 02 - Understanding how important these principles are in order to benefit patients, society and the profession, with particular attention being paid to professional secrecy.
  • 17 - Understanding and recognising the principles of ergonomics and safety at work (including the control of cross infection, radiation protection and occupational and biological diseases).
  • 18 - Being aware of, critically evaluating and knowing how to use sources of clinical and biomedical infomation in order to obtain, organise, interpret and communicate scientific and healthcare-related information.

  • 10 - Knowing and being able to identify the psychological and physical problems derived from gender violence in order to train students in the prevention, early detection of, care for and rehabilitation of the victims of this type of violence.
  • 22 - Having the ability to make an initial diagnostic judgement and establish a reasonable diagnostic strategy, as well as being competent in recognising situations that require urgent dental treatment.
  • 23 - Establishing a diagnosis, prognosis and suitable treatment planning for all the different clinical areas of Dentistry, being competent in terms of the diagnosis, prognosis and writing up the dental care plan for patients who require special care, including medically compromised patients (such as diabetics, those with hypertension, a depressed immune system or are anticoagulated, etc) and patients with disabilities.
  • 24 - Recognising situations in which lives are at risk and knowing how to provide basic life-support.
  • 25 - Being aware of and applying basic treatment for the most common dental pathology in patients of all ages. The treatment procedures must be based on the concept of minimally invasive surgery and an overall and comprehensive focus on dental treatment.
  • 26 - Knowing how to plan and undertake multidisciplinary, sequential and comprehensive dental treatment of limited complexity for patients of all ages and conditions and for patients who require special care.
  • 27 - Outlining and proposing suitable preventative measures for each clinical situation.
  • 28 - Acquiring clinical experience under suitable supervision.
  • 29 - Recognising the underlying causes of dental health in the population, whether genetic, lifestyle, demographic, environmental, social, economic, psychological or cultural.
  • 30 - Recognising the role of the dentist in actions to prevent and protect against oral diseases, as well as the maintenance and promotion of good health, both at an individual level and a community level.
  • 31 - Knowing about the National Healthcare System, as well as the basic aspects of healthcare legislation, clinical management and the correct use of healthcare resources, and understanding the importance of the role of the dentist in the field of Primary Healthcare
  • 93 - Final degree project: A cross-disciplinary subject involving a project covering various types of material.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  1. Integrate, organize and implement all the knowledge acquired during the degree to provide adequate and comprehensive dental care to the patient.
  2. Perform a multidisciplinary, sequential and integrated dental patient age and condition of any dental treatment.

  5. Collect accurate and documented information on a research topic of a field of dentistry.

The student can not star a clinical study  needing a CEIM ( COmité ètic d'investiagció) without the direct apporal of the subject responsible ( Dr. Oscar Salomó).


In case of a clinical study developed outside of the University  in another clinical center is the student's responsability to get the contract between the new center and the university as the ethical committes needed for the development of the study.

 

All the studies exept systematic reviews o narrative reviews need the aprovall of the ethical comitee of the university. Is the responsability of the student to get the autorization prior to the study initiation.

“In vitro” study

  1. Bibliographical review to determine the methodology used in recently published studies in similar areas. The lecturer shall oversee the information sources and guide students in the selection of articles.
  2. If students join an investigation that is already under way, the lead investigator of the study shall determine their role and therefore the tutor shall meet with the student in question to study the protocol and for training in the study methodology. After the student has received training and is ready, the tutor shall decide when to begin the experimental phase assigned to the student.
  3. If the BT (bachelor’s thesis) is based on a new study, the tutor shall accompany and guide students in the study design and preparation of the protocol, and also in the training and calibration of the student in the techniques to be used, deciding when to begin the experimental phase. The student and the lecturer shall jointly prepare the documentation for informing the CER.
  4. The materials used must be included in a table including name, brand, country of origin, batch number, etc.
  5. Preparation of the BT research report, including the following sections: Introduction, Objectives, Work Hypothesis, Material and methods. The lecturer shall supervise the writing and form of the document, suggesting necessary corrections to the student.

“In vivo” study

  1. Review of the relevant literature on the topic, with references to standard treatments and the different protocols to be followed for this type of treatment.
  2. Bibliographical review to determine the methodology used in recently published studies in similar areas. The lecturer shall oversee the information sources and guide students in the selection of articles.
  3. Clinical case: Clinical history and pathology description, rationale for the study, description of the patient and any relevant medical or dental record.
    1. Clinical case carried out by the student: The student and the tutor must jointly select the case from among the student’s patients and design the treatment plan. The student, alongside the lecturer, must prepare the documentation necessary for informing the CEIC (Clinical Research Ethics Committee).
    2. Clinical case study not performed by the student: the tutor shall provide the student with the information and the documentation of the treatment undertaken.
  4. Describe the different treatment options and the reasons for the selection of the chosen treatment.
  5. Preparation of the BT research report, including the following sections: Introduction, Objectives, Material and methods: Description of the clinical case and of the technique to be used based on the bibliographical review. The lecturer shall supervise the writing and form of the document, suggesting necessary corrections to the student.
  6. If the in vivo study involves the inclusion of an undergraduate student as part of a master’s or doctoral project already under way:
    1.  The department shall be responsible for determining what type of data the student shall present.
    2. A letter, known as an Amendment, must be addressed to the Clinical Research Ethics Committee informing them of the inclusion of the student in the clinical study and what his or her functions shall be.

Retrospective study.

  1. Bibliographical review to determine the methodology used in recently published studies in similar areas. The lecturer shall oversee the information sources and guide students in the selection of articles.
  2. The student shall meet with his or her tutor to design the data collection sheets.
  3. The student and the lecturer shall jointly prepare the documentation for informing the CER.
  4. Preparation of the BT research report, including the following sections: Introduction, Objectives, Work Hypothesis, Material and methods. The lecturer shall supervise the writing and form of the document, suggesting necessary corrections to the student.

Literature review:

  1. Bibliographical review to determine the methodology used in recently published studies in similar areas. The lecturer shall oversee the information sources and guide students in the selection of articles.
  2. A minimum of 50 articles published in journals indexed in the Journal Citations Report (JCR) shall be reviewed. With a maximum of 10 years of publication.
  3. Preparation of the BT research report, including the following sections: Introduction, Objectives, Work Hypothesis, Material and methods. The lecturer shall supervise the writing and form of the document, suggesting necessary corrections to the student.
  4. Introduction giving background on the topic.
  5. Materials and methods: The keywords will be described, as well as the search engines used. After the abstract, the 3-10 keywords or short sentences that have guided the literature search will be attached.

Evaluation systems and criteria


Online

Continuous assessment of the student will be carried out through tutorials in accordance with the established calendar.

Individual work:

The lecturer will have an evaluation sheet that will need to be filled out after each tutorial session. This will enable the lecturer to evaluate a series of parameters allowing for the objective monitoring of the individual work of the student.

Tutorial sessions:

The lecturer will mark the communication with the student, as well as his or her evolution through the various stages. Presentation of assigned tasks, punctuality, interest, etc.

Attendance of all activities related to the subject is compulsory and will have an influence over the final mark.

At the end of the first semester and as per the deadline,  will carry out the assessment of the written report.  

Individual work: 25%

Tutorial sessions: 25%

Written report: 50% ( 2 external reviewers 25%n each)
