Introduction

This practices want to give a global vision of the oral surgery to the students., working in surgical teams. There are different associated clinical centers to UIC. Namely: Teknon Medical Center, Hospital Plató, and Hospital General de Catalunya. At each of these centers there is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department chaired by faculty members of IMOS supervising the surgical activity and is a complement of the classes.

These practices are obligatory and carried out in groups of 1 or two students during the whole year.

 

Pre-course requirements

Students are asked to have followed the basic course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. All students will have insurance coverage from UIC when acting at the Associated Centers

If is necessary, the students must signed the data protection law

 

Objectives

1) To learn diagnosis, planning treatment and to trait the cases of moderate and high complexity in the maxillofacial surgery field.

2) Introduction to the maxillofacial surgery in different fields: oncologic surgery, glandular surgery, orthognathic surgery and oral surgery.

3) To know the higiene and sterile rules in the operating room in the hospital

4) To learn working in a team.

5) To do Final Master Works (FMW) and investigation studies.

 

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Awareness and dominance of all surgical scenarios

Gradually move from assistance to surgical cases to direct management of them

Skills in all surgical procedures to allow different exits for a given problem

Be able after the third year to potentially solve most oral surgical procedures

Interact with different departments in multi-specialty medical settings

Interact with paramedics in different settings

Manage complications in an expedite and orderly manner

 

Learning outcomes of the subject

Manage any case of dentoalveolar surgery

Be able to differentially diagnose oral medical problems.

Develop arguing and debating skills when it comes to defend a specific treatment plan

Have deep radiological knowledge of different imaging techniques (CBCT, MR, Panoramic x-ray)

Be able to connect and cooperate with other medical specialists in a hospital setting.

 

Syllabus

Students will attend oral clinical and surgical sessions at the Associated Hospitals in groups of two or one student on regular basis. There, varied cases of mostly dentoalveolar surgery are treated as well as different kind of pathologies ( head and neck oncology, dentoskeletal malformations,TMJ, etc) 

At Instituto Maxilofacial in Teknon Medical Center (Barcelona), complex orthognathic, preprosthetic, TMJ, and oncological cases are treated. IMOS trainees will occasionally participate as assistants in these cases.

All IMOS students must keep record in a LogBook of all surgical interventions performed as surgeons or assistants during all the program. This LogBook will be used both for final evaluation and for accreditation at the European Board of oral Surgery

Every student must to assist every monday morning during 6 consecutives weeks

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

All students will be under continued evaluation based on: number of cases treated as assistants, or surgeons, diagnostic and management skills, evidence based treatment plans, degree of participation in the sessions, punctuality, and behavior towards patients and other staff members.
