Attendance at the sessions is mandatory. The student who arrives 10 minutes late will not enter at the class. Only absenses with proof will be permited.

The lack of more than 25% of the sessions leads to direct suspension of the quarter and a week of clinical activity.

Introduction

Better knowledge of the basic issues of periodontics and expand the student's knowledge.

Objectives

Learning in a dynamic way the foundations of Periodontics for their clinical application. Have theoretical knowledge in order to make a good diagnosis and treatment plan. 

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Being able to establish a correct diagnosis and treatment plan for periodontal patients based on extensive knowledge of the disease, its risk factors, the association of periodontics with systemic conditions of the patient and all the factors that can be associated.

Being able to make a correct hygienic phase, knowing the benefits that other areas of dentistry can provide.

Know when peridontal surgery is indicated (resective, regenerative and mucogingival surgery) and clinical practice primarily in resective surgery.

Understand the importance of periodontal maintenance for teeth and implants of our patients.

Learning outcomes of the subject

To know etiology and risk and associated factors of periodontal disease.

Be able to plan periodontal treatment.

  1. Basic concepts in Periodontics 

 

1.1. Anatomy of periodontium

1.2. Clinical and radiographic periodontal examination 

1.3. Diagnosis and classification of periodontal diseases

1.4. Prognosis

1.5. Epidemiology and risk factors of periodontal diseases 

1.6. Microbiology of periodontal diseases 

1.7. Immunoinflamatory response in periodontal diseases

1.8. Effect of tobacco smoking and diabetes mellitus on periodontal diseases 

1.9. Systemic factors and medications impacting the periodontium 

1.10.   Occlusal trauma and local factors         

 

2. Periodontal evaluation, treatment planning and non surgical therapy. 

2.1. Plaque control

2.2.  Scaling and root planning. Limitations and objectives

2.3.  Locally acting chemotherapeutic agents: antiseptics 

2.4. Systemic chemotherapeutic agents: antibiotics

 

3. Surgical therapy

3.1. Principles of periodontal surgery 

3.2. Resective periodontal surgery 

3.3. Crown enlargement  

3.4. Principles of periodontal regenerative surgery.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Each week a student will present a schematic presentation of the subject in Power point (10-20 minutes), which consist of a summary of the topic and the objectives to be achieved during the seminar.

The remaining students will perform a review of the literature and input from current items of interest relating to the topic.

Clinical cases may be presented by teachers and students.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

An examination will be made at the end of each quarter with short questions to be developed by the student.

To pass the exams a minimum score of 7 is required. In the case of not passing any of the quarterly examinations,  a make-up exam in july will take place.
