Introduction

In this course, the main concepts in the study of phonetics and phonology will be introduced. More specifically, students will become familiar with the sounds of the English language and will be introduced to different accents of this language. Moreover, methods to improve learners' pronunciation in the language classroom will be introduced.

Objectives

As explained in the Introduction, the aim of this subject is to provide theoretical foundations for the teaching of English Pronunciation in the EFL context. 

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CEM-52 - To be able to foment initial contact with a foreign language.
  • CEM-62 - To relate theory and practice to the classroom and school context.
  • CEM-63 - To participate in teaching activity and learn how to do, act and reflect based on practice.
  • CET-1 - Interpersonal responsibility: to be aware of professional performance and influence on students. To have the skills and knowledge to manage group processes and communication for good collaboration with and between students.
  • CG-11 - To be familiar with the elements that make up the quality-based approach, the different levels of proficiency and how to develop this skill as much as possible.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • To become familiar with basic concepts in the study of phonetics and phonology.
  • To recognise and produce English speech sounds.
  • To improve your English pronunciation.
  • To identify contrastive elements between the sounds of English and those in your habitual languages (Sp, Cat).
  • To identify and correctly use intonation patterns in English.
  • To start teaching English pronunciation to young learners. 
  • To apply the theoretical knowledge to the EFL classroom.

Unit 1: Introduction to pronunciation study

Unit 2: English speech sounds and different accents 

Unit 3: Suprasegmental characteristics of English 

Unit 4: Pronunciation in the EFL classroom for young learners.

 

Teaching and learning activities

In person

This subject is organised around face-to-face classes and online work. Participants are also asked to complete compulsory and optional tasks as part of their autonomous learning process outside the classroom. Specifically, the methodology of this course involves: 

Theoretical and practical classes

  • Flipped classroom
  • Problem solving tasks
  • Oral presentations and written assignments
  • Individual, pair and group work
  • In-class discussions and debates

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The evaluation of this subject consists of a series of exercises/activities indicated after each session and that you should deliver via Moodle and in Word format within a week

  1.  Exercises after the March 1st class  (see Moodle) - Deliver before 8th March
  2. Exercises of the March 8th  (see Moodle) - Deliver before 15th March
  3. Exercises of the March 15th  (see Moodle) - Deliver before 22nd  March

 

The final grade of the subject will be the weighted average of the three exercise/activities.
