Introduction

The demographic projections for the coming years tell us about an aging population with more chronic medical conditions. The social reality is causing a considerable number of people with special needs, frail elderly or with important chronic pathologies live in residences or specific centers. These patients require dental care that goes beyond the usual and punctual care function, encompassing prevention concepts and incorporating differentiated work equipment and techniques

Pre-course requirements

Degree in Dentistry or Stomatology is required

Objectives

That dentists know the institutions, residences, reception centers or hospitalization of patients with special needs, the management techniques of these patients and the logistics required in these cases

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

To train dentists with knowledge of the medical and pharmacological pathologies that condition dental treatments in elderly and disabled patients.To train dentists capable of integrating into multidisciplinary care teams for the elderly.To train dentists susceptible to know the particularities of dental treatment that is solved in a hospital environment under sedation and / or anesthesia techniques.To train dentists interested in the investigation and study of old age, disability and oral pathology.To train odontologists capable of treating odontologically patients with medical or pharmacological commitment.Train dentists susceptible to know the diagnostic management and treatment of mucosal lesions.To train dentists with knowledge of the medical, social, psychological and structural characteristics of institutionalized patients and host institutions

Syllabus

Assistance in a hospital environment for mentally handicapped patients

Assistance in residential institutions for elderly patients

Assistance to any institution that welcomes or cares for patients with special needs

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Treatments required by institutionalized patients in nursing homes and / or in a hospital environment under sedation or general anesthesia.

Students prepare the cases they serve and hang them in drive

The students participate with their cases in informative activities related to the subject through the networks
Students present their cases in congresses or events related to the subject
