Introduction

The demographic projections for the coming years tell us about an aging population with more chronic medical conditions. The social reality is causing a considerable number of people with special needs, frail elderly or with important chronic pathologies live in residences or specific centers. These patients require dental care that goes beyond the usual and punctual care function, encompassing prevention concepts and incorporating differentiated work equipment and techniques. The theoretical knowledge about systemic diseases, their influence on the dental situation. Mucosal lesions and treatment techniques applied to the elderly are of paramount importance for the Clinical Residency

Degree in Dentistry or Stomatology is required

Objectives

That dentists have the theoretical basis for the management of institutionalized patients, the elderly and with complex medical or pharmacological pathologies. That they know the different techniques that the dentist can use in the attention to this profile of patients

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

To train dentists with knowledge of the medical and pharmacological pathologies that condition dental treatments in elderly and disabled patients.To train dentists capable of integrating into multidisciplinary care teams for the elderly.To train dentists susceptible to know the particularities of dental treatment that is solved in a hospital environment under sedation and / or anesthesia techniques.To train dentists interested in the investigation and study of old age, disability and oral pathology.To train odontologists capable of treating odontologically patients with medical or pharmacological commitment.Train dentists susceptible to know the diagnostic management and treatment of mucosal lesions.To train dentists with knowledge of the medical, social, psychological and structural characteristics of institutionalized patients and host institutions

Part I: general aspects

    Epidemiological and preventive aspects of dental care for patients with previous pathology.
    Legal aspects of assistance to patients with disabilities.
    Prevention and management of emergency situations in the dental office.
    Periodontal aspects in the dental treatment of special patients.
    Implantology and surgical aspects in special patients.
    Dental therapy in special patients.
    Prosthetic rehabilitation in patients with medical commitment.
    Orthodontic treatment in special patients.
    Manifestations in the oral mucosa of systemic diseases.

Part II: medically compromised patients

    Supplementary tests. Which ones to request and how to interpret them.
    Odontological assistance to patients with infectious diseases. Hepatitis lyric.
    Dental assistance to patients with HIV infection.
    Dental assistance to patients with immune disorders.
    Odontological assistance to cancer patients.
    Odontological assistance to patients with cardiovascular pathology.
    Odontological assistance to patients with respiratory pathology and other otorhinolaryngological conditions of interest to the dentist.
    Dental assistance to patients with endocrine pathology: diabetic patient with adrenal pathology.
    Dental assistance to patients with kidney problems: dialysis and transplant patient.
    Dental assistance to patients in pregnancy and lactation, contraceptive users and menopausal women.
    Dental assistance to patients with alterations in hemostasis. Dental management of the anemic patient.
    Adverse reactions to medications used in dentistry. Pharmacovigilance.

Part III: patients with disabilities and oral diseases in older adults

    Odontological characteristics of the patient with disabilities. Genetic and acquired disabling syndromes with impact on dentistry. Neurological syndromes The patient with sensory disability.
    Behavior management in the patient with disability.
    Sedation in dentistry. Description of the procedures. Indications and contraindications.
    Odontological situation of the elderly. Epidemiology.
    Conditions of dental management in older adults.
    Dental assistance to psychiatric patients and neurodegenerative diseases.

Part IV: hospital dental care

     Hospital odontological assistance.

Part V: rare diseases. Consequences in the oral cavity

    Definition, epidemiology, oral characteristics of patients with rare diseases.

        Cornelia de Lange syndrome, West syndrome, tuberous sclerosis.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The students will attend in online mode through the University platform to the theoretical classes on Monday nights at 10 pm

The students will prepare some of the subjects under instruction of the teaching staff

The students will take a global exam of the theoretical contents of the online
The students will present and defend at the end of the course a Graduate Project supervised by the teaching staff
