Introduction

This course focuses on the study of the last stage of non surgical treatment, the root canal obturation. Root canal treatment promotes pulpo-periapical healing. Sealing the root canal system will maintain and prolong the clinical and radiographic success and prevent recurrence of periapical pathologies, therefore, the obturation has a fundamental value to success in the medium and long term in root canal treatment.

With this course, students will acquire theoretical knowledge through understanding of the current scientific literature in the area of the root canal obturation and preclinical practice to have the ability to perform a fullthree-dimensional hermetic sealing of the root canals.

Pre-course requirements

Medium-High level of english

Objectives

1. To knw the requirements and objectives for the three dimensional root canal filling.

2. Recognize the clinical criteria that determine when to and when not to seal.

3. To know main sealing materials or cores used more often: list their components and general properties.

4. To know the properties and functions of the ideal sealers.

5 .To describe the technique of cold-lateral condensation, advantages, disadvantages, indications, contraindications and clinical limitations.

6. To describe the thermoplastic techniques: types, advantages, disadvantages, indications, contraindications and clinical limitations

7. To describe obturation techniques based on adhesive systems.

8. To describe the technique of formation of the apical barrier with different materials, composition, characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and biological properties.

9. Knowing what obturation technique is suitable for different types of root canal morphology.

10. To analyze the clinical and radiographic criteria for assessing the quality of obturation.
