Society and Health is a course aimed at 4th year students. Although it belongs to the Community specialization, it may be extended to students of Clinical specialization. In the International specialization the subject International Cooperation in Health has 3 ECTS in common with this subject. This subject is an introduction to development cooperation projects from a nursing perspective. How can a nurse participate in all stages? The Society and Health course will also develop some issues from a not only international but regional and local perspective.

At the end of course "Society and Health", the student will be able to:

• Identify environmental and social factors that influence health.
• Appreciate the importance of food and its risks.
• Understand the importance of the relationship between health, urban planning, housing and environment.
• Understand the city as a more social and ecological human place.
• Elaborate care plans, incorporating elements of the cultural context of the user within Code of Ethics for Nurses
• Propose strategies to empower people and communities.
• Recognize health promotion and health education as fundamental tools in order to encourage individuals and communities to maintain and especially to improve their state of health.
• Understanding the principles that determine behaviours related to health, maintenance, retention and modification.
• Plan, design, implement and evaluate health programmes aimed at the community.
• Identify action strategies for health promotion.
• Identify the different health agents within the community.
• Recognize the different cultures living in our society. 

• How to develop an International Cooperation Project: stages of the project design. Projects examples in Africa; Latin America; India; etc.
• Get to know the field: how to make health diagnosis. Evaluation of the health status of the Community. Working with leaders, community agents.
• Help relationship help in important disadvantaged situations.
• Home cures and opinions. Home remedies: healing without medicine. 
• Seminars and workshops about: training health workers; sessions for parents; workshops for children in schools; health literacy; home visits; health care; prevention workshops.
• Request for institutional aid for development cooperation projects.
• Dissemination of information: newspapers, radio, television and the Internet; participation in conferences, articles in scientific journals, etc. Photography Seminar: Photographs for the project.  
• Research: research projects on Health Cooperation programmes

• The methodology will be varied, generally having one session focus on the professor exposition and others focused on exercises in the classroom. Among other activities there will be workshops, seminars (photography, video, etc.), discussions, role-playing, etc. In addition, participants will be invited in cooperation projects of an international scope

• For students enrolled in English for Nursing 1 (09826), International Cooperation and Health (09824) and Transcultural Nursing (09823) there will be a common project to develop English communication competencies and integrate and apply the content of the three subjects.  This activity consists of a 30-minute oral presentation and written work which will be tutored and evaluated through the three subjects.  International Cooperation and Health and Transcultural Nursing will focus on the content, and English for Nursing will focus on the communication skills.

There will be continuous assessment will that will take into consideration the following:

• Participation (attendance, active participation, etc.) and exercises in class 20%. 
• Workshops and seminars on prevention and health promotion. Group projects and oral presentation 50% (a 20 minute workshop will be worth 35% and a 5 min one will be worth 15%).
• Exercise projects photography (will be held individually and independently and sent through the virtual platform Moodle) 5%.
• Exercise: writing a news release about a project (it will be held individually and independently and sent through the virtual platform moodle) 10%.
• Exercise for the Unit 3 (resilience and help relationship in disadvantaged situations) 15%

In the first resit the results of the ongoing evaluation will be taken into account. The mark obtained for participation and class exercises is not taken into account in first resit assessment. All the exercises that have been failed must be retaken and submitted before the following date: 27/06/13, 10am.

For the second and third resit the same criteria applies as for the first and second.

 Before enrolling again in the subject please check compatibility with other subjects.

 Honors will not be awarded in the first resit.
