Introduction

English for Nursing II is a subject that introduces and discusses the current problems in public health from a nursing perspective. It will also help students to develop the critical capacity necessary to meet the changing health needs. This course shows health problems affecting morbidity and mortality in different geographic realities. And it will help to improve the chances of seeking employment both locally and internationally. Students will learn the existence of different health systems and how they affect the people's health.   There will also be discussed those current problems that might be addressed through strategies of health promotion and disease prevention. Finally, there will be exposed the various possibilities in which nurses can work abroad and research about international public health issues. This subject will be taught in English.

Objectives

  1. Knowing the ways of learning in the nursing profession and how to develop skills and knowledge using Patricia Benner's theory (from novice to expert).
  2. Knowing the current approaches in the nursing profession at local, national and international level.
  3. Discussing future challenges in the field of nursing at local, national and international level.
  4. Recognizing the social role of nurses in the media and health policy.
  5. Understand the responsibility of nurses in international public health.
  6. Critically analyse ways by which nurses can work in international groups (networking, research, management, etc ...).
  7. Knowing experiences of nurses who have studied nursing and / or worked or developed projects outside Spain.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Recognize the international dimension of nursing and health care.
  • Understanding the international dimension of care. Transmissible diseases in developing countries: prevention and control.
  • Learn how to communicate orally information about nursing issues through lectures / oral presentations.
  • Learn how do a written communication about nursing issues.
  • Read and analyse literature about nursing issues understanding the main ideas.
  • Identify the socio-political and economic context that influence professional practice and the functioning of health organizations

  • Patricia Benner model "from novice to expert": conceptual framework for learning and professional nursing development.
  • Health policies and systems.
  • Epidemiology and public health as basis of national and international health problems knowledge.
  • Contemporary public health problems: in countries with high, medium and low income.
  • Global solutions for global problems.
  • Scientific knowledge and sources of information / research
  • The international work of nurses (networking, support, research, management, etc.). 

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Methodology will be focus on teamwork and discussion as well as on master classes that will occupy 35% of the total time. Classes are taught primarily in English.

The student must participate in class and in the seminars, discussing and debating the proposed topics.

  • Classroom group work and final evaluation
  • Problem solving seminar

Some exercises will done in the classroom, others are done independently. They will be sent by   moodle and / or presented in class. 

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The three teachers of the subject will jointly evaluate the student, taking into account the following criteria:

  • Attendance and participation in the sessions (20%).
  • Resolution of the seminars proposed in class (30%)
  • Tests: intermediate and final (25%)

Round 2:Honors will not be awarded in the first resit.
