Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.


Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the area of dentistry that deals with the supervision, guidance and correction of growth and maturation of the craniofacial structures.

Major responsibilities of orthodontic practice include the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of occlusion anomalies and associated changes in bone and soft tissue.

The orthodontist should monitor the guidance of the dentition and the relationship between their supporting structures to achieve and maintain harmonious relations between the face and cranial structures that allow the patient physiology and dento-facial aesthetics optimal.

Basic orthodontic subjects, topics on craniofacial growth, tooth development and physiology of the stomatognathic system. The imaging in its various facets is an indispensable diagnostic tool and will be studied in this course as well as lateral and frontal cephalometric skull. Biomechanics, different types of tooth movement, the response of the tooth under the application of forces and materials used in orthodontic treatment complete the course content.

Objectives

The educational objectives for the subject of Basic orthodontic subjects include a set of educational activities on the cranio-facial growth and tooth development. The study of the main radiological techniques used in orthodontic diagnosis is also introduced. 

In this course the basic principles of dental and orthopedic movement work. Deepening orthodontic materials and the laws of biomechanics.

 The objectives of the labs are the practical application of theoretical knowledge and the acquisition of attitude and reasoning and manual dexterity needed for diagnosis through facial analysis, intraoral examination, study models, panoramic and lateral skull teleradiography .

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Knowledge of the development of the dentition and competent to identify a particular situation tooth development

Knowledge of facial growth


Knowledge of the physiology of the stomatognathic system

Be competent to understand the biomechanical principles tooth movement

Be competent to perform a cephalometric diagnosis

Learning outcomes of the subject

The orthodontist at the end of their university education should know the physiological aspects of tooth development, facial growth and stomatognathic system in general.

The imaging is an important part in the diagnosis of the patient and is essential in their formation as well as the different types of cephalometric analysis.

The student should develop along the course the ability to diagnose the patient by cephalometric analysis.
