Introduction

The Clinical Residency program in Oral Implantology spends 50% of his time to the diagnosis and treatment plan for patients provided by the University Dental Clinic (CUO). During this residency, students will do the first visit, a complete diagnosis including last generation CBCT, clinical photography, articulator mounting and preparation of radiological and surgical guides for their own patients. After presenting the cases in the corresponding clinical session, the student will be allowed for the placement of prosthetically guided dental implants in the operating room of the CUO. The follow-up, from the first visit to the patient's discharge, is done entirely during the program. In this way, the student acquires a comprehensive overview of modern implantology and strengthens the knowledge of theoretical sessions.

Pre-course requirements

The requirements to conduct clinical practice in the CUO include mandatory attendance to preclinical seminars and practices. The spoken Spanish proficiency to communicate with patients is highly recommended. No practices will be allowed on patients without adequate uniformity and mandatory instruments and materials .

Objectives

The aim of this course is to get students to acquire the skills that allow treating total and partially edentulous patients in a comprehensive manner, from the first visit until discharge. Applying theoretical knowledge, students will implement their ability to diagnose using tools such as semi-adjustable articulator, digital camera or cone beam tomography (CBCT), develop a treatment plan and eventually operate his or her patients.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Upon completion of his Residency Clinic, students will be able to diagnose and develop a treatment plan safely and to perform implant surgery in total and partially edentulous patients in simple cases.

Learning outcomes of the subject

To know the surgical anatomy
To know the different radiological techniques
To know the steps that must be taken into account in a rehabilitation on teeth and implants
To diagnose and study additional complementary explorations
Establish a treatment plan
To know the aesthetic parameters of the oral cavity
To know how to evaluate the aesthetic parameters
To know the means to achieve an aesthetic treatment
To know the steps of a single unit, partial and complete prosthetic rehabilitation with implants in different clinical cases.
Knowing the basic surgical principles of oral surgery and implantology
Knowing advanced surgical treatment (application of bone substitutes and membranes in simple cases)
Identify different implant systems and their particularities.

Syllabus

Application of theoretical knowledge in order to perform proper clinical assistance
Clinical Photography
Mounting on semi-adjustable articulator
Preparation of radiological guides
Management of cone beam tomography (CBCT)
Preparation of surgical guides
Instrument identification and surgical field mounting
Basic techniques of oral surgery: incisions, sutures ...
Implant surgery with different systems
Application of bone substitutes and resorbable membranes

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Healthcare activity, in which patients are visited to perform a diagnosis and a treatment plan that allows the placement of dental implants safely and predictably.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Each of the practices will be evaluated taking into account the acquisition and application of knowledge of the student as well as his attitude and managing the patients. Punctuality will also be evaluated. Attendance is mandatory.
