Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.

This subject are divided in three parts, a clinical part, a theoretical part of Advanced Periodontics and a surgical seminar. In clinical practice, the student learns to treat the patient in the different phases of periodontal treatment, to be able to diagnose and plan the most appropriate treatment, knowing all the possible treatment options. Learn to justify the treatment carried out according to scientific bases and with criteria.  Clinical practice includes all phases of periodontal treatment, the interrelation with the other areas of dentistry and the importance of interdisciplinary dentistryMREA competences

MREA competences

MREA
        ⁃       Prophylaxis
        ⁃       Scaling nd root planning
        ⁃       Maintenance Therapy
⁃       Restorative crown lengthening (posterior areas)
        ⁃       Gingivectomy posterior areas
        ⁃       Distal wedge

PERIO (MREA assisting/working with a 2nd or 3rd year Perio Residents)
        ⁃       Aesthetic crown lengthening
⁃       Mucogingival surgery (single and multiple gingival recession treatment, free gingival graft over teeth and implants, etc...
⁃       Step 3 surgeries (perio surgery)

The Advanced Periodontics subject reviews the indications and different surgical techniques for periodontal surgery.  In the surgical seminar surgical clinical cases performed in the Periodontics department are discussed.

Pre-course requirements

Bachelor of Dentistry and being at second year of the MREA Master.

Objectives

The student must be able to diagnose periodontal pathology and be able to manage a part of periodontal treatment in their daily practice, knowing the sequence of treatment and possible treatment options. Therefore, student must know the treatments to be carried out in the periodontal hygienic and surgical phase. Student must also know the interrelation of periodontics with other specialties.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Be competent in making a complete periodontal diagnosis.  Perform the periodontal hygienic phase correctly.  Know the indications for periodontal surgery.  To be able to perform resective surgery and crown lengthening.  Know the principles of regenerative and mucogingival surgery.  Placement of single implants.

Learning outcomes of the subject

To be able to carry out a part of the periodontal treatment of their patients.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Advanced Periodontics classes are taught by professors. Surgical seminars are presented by students from the periodontics department and discussed by students and teachers.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Quarterly exam of the subject Advanced Periodontics. Class attendance is mandatory, only justified absences will be accepted. Tardiness due to surgical treatment prior to class is not justified. The absence of more than 25% of the classes will lead to the direct suspension of the quarter and two weeks  of the clinical activity in the CUO. Repeated absences will be sanctioned with literature review works to be submitted within one week. If a seminar is missing more than 75% of the students who must attend, the seminar will be canceled.
