Introduction

The environment of the Biomedical Sciences is rich and offers the possibility of developing abilities that are not necessarily in intimate relation with the knowledge of Biology and Pathology, in a large number of different professional areas.

Within the field of Biomedical Sciences, research is the professional choice most chosen by students. But there are other options such as the pharmaceutical or biotechnological industry, the management of research, clinical analysis, scientific dissemination, or teaching.

With the intention of going beyond the fundamental knowledge that a professional of the Biomedical Sciences must acquire, in this subject all the available professional opportunities will be presented, so that the student knows them from the beginnings of the career and can contemplate them and integrate them in the configuration of your professional profile.

On the other hand, a series of tools will also be offered that will allow the student to take full advantage of both the teaching activities that will take place during the course of the degree, as well as the professional development that will come after obtaining the degree.

Objectives

The subject has two main objectives:

1) Offer students tools that:

  • Allow effective communication and dissemination.
  • Help in the management of interpersonal conflicts and favor teamwork.
  • Facilitate the establishment of objectives and the strategy to achieve them.

2) Know the professional outputs of the Biomedical Sciences.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB02 - Students must know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and have the competences that tend to be demonstrated through the creation and defence of arguments and the resolution of problems within their field of study.
  • CB03 - Students must have the ability to bring together and interpret significant data (normally within their area of study) to issue judgements that include a reflection on significant issues of a social, scientific and ethical nature.
  • CB04 - That students can transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • CE22 - To be aware of the professional opportunities available in the field of Biomedical Sciences and acquire tools to undertake scientific communication that is correct for all types of audiences.
  • CG08 - To use tools that are complementary to the basic learning on the degree programme, AND that facilitate labour insertion for graduates.
  • CT01 - To develop the organisational and planning skills that are suitable in each moment.
  • CT02 - To develop the ability to resolve problems.
  • CT03 - To develop analytical and summarising skills.
  • CT04 - To interpret experimental results and identify consistent and inconsistent elements.

  • CT06 - To know how to communicate, give presentations and write up scientific reports.

  • CT13 - To be aware of the general and specific aspects related to the field of nutrition and ageing.
  • CT14 - To respect the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, and the promotion of human rights and the values that are specific to a culture of peace and democratic values.

Learning outcomes of the subject

At the end of the course, the student:

  • Has learned the main professional opportunities of Biomedical Sciences. 
  • Has learned other professional opportunities in the field of Biomedical Sciences. 
  • Understand the dynamics and configuration of the optional degree offered by the UIC. 
  • Have learned techniques that facilitate effective communication and outreach. 
  • Have become familiar with interpersonal conflict management. 
  • Understands the importance of a correct establishment of objectives to favor their achievement.

Syllabus

Unit I: Oral communication tools.

Unit II: Professional outputs of the Biomedical Sciences.

Unit III: Group work: interpersonal conflict management.

Unit IV: Mindfulness and achievement of objectives.

Unit V: Scientific dissemination project.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



The teaching methodologies that this subject contains are:

Lectures: presentation of a theoretical topic by the teacher.

Case methods: statement of a real or imaginary situation. The students work the questions formulated in small groups and in class the answers are discussed. The teacher intervenes actively and if necessary brings new knowledge.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



1) Students in first call:

To obtain the final grade of the subject, an oral presentation, a test-type exam and the presentation of a project on scientific dissemination will be evaluated. The weight of each of these evaluations on the final grade will be as follows:

* Oral presentation: 20%

* Test type exam: 30%

* Project on scientific disclosure: 50%

 

In order to pass the first call, it is mandatory to get a minimum of 5 for both the scientific dissemination project and the multiple choice exam and the average of the 3 evaluations must be equal to or greater than 5.

 

2) Students in second call:

Students will have to repeat the exam and/or the dissemination project, if they have obtained less than 5 in the respective evaluations.  

Multiple choice exam: there will be another multiple choice exam, with characteristics similar to the first call.  

Scientific dissemination project: the same project will have to be done but in a different format. The professors of the subject will evaluate the project that can obtain a maximum of 7.  

To pass the second call, it is mandatory to get a minimum of 5 for both the scientific dissemination project and the multiple choice exam and the average of the 3 evaluations must be equal to or greater than 5.

 

3) Students in third and fifth call:

It'll be mandatory to repeat the scientific dissemination project within a new group and take the multiple choice test again. 

The grade of the oral presentation will be saved.  The weighting and rules of these calls are the same as for the first call.

 

4) Students in fourth and sixth call:

 The weighting and rules of these calls are the same as for the second call.   

To pass the subject, it is mandatory to take each of the proposed evaluations and obtain a minimum of 5 in the multiple choice exam.

Bibliography and resources

There is no specific bibliographic source to work the different blocks of this subject. The professors of each block will recommend different bibliographical sources or they will contribute the material in power point format.
