Introduction

The internships are in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 1707/2011, of 18 November, which regulates the external academic internships of university students, as well as the provisions of the Internal Regulations governing internships in companies and institutions approved by the Executive Committee of the Governing Board of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) on 14.10.2013.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB8 - Students should be able to integrate their knowledge so that they can deal with the complexity involved in making judgements based on information that may be incomplete or limited, and may therefore require considerations of the social and ethical responsibilities involved in applying knowledge or judgement.
  • CE03 - When a patient has an intense or worsening condition, students should know how to identify and assess clinical indications of a risk to their life or a serious danger to their functions, establishing priorities for their treatment.
  • CE05 - To use a patient's medical history and physical examination to identify the signs and symptoms of the most common serious conditions and serious complications to chronic conditions, correctly interpreting the information.
  • CE06 - To demonstrate their knowledge and flexible and decisive handling of protocols and guidelines for clinical practice when dealing with the most serious or common conditions in urgent and emergency care.
  • CE07 - To carry out a continuous re-evaluation of the patient in urgent and emergency care in order to readjust the provisional diagnosis and consequent change to the treatment plan when necessary.
  • CE09 - To recognise the risks associated with operation procedures and the diagnostic techniques and treatments employed in emergencies, and to carry them out as safely as possible in terms of the safety of the student, other professionals and the patient.
  • CG6 - To apply current healthcare legislation related to both pre-hospital and hospital care.
  • CT01 - To respect the ethical standards and laws that govern healthcare and the relationship with the patient in urgent and emergency care, as well as the ability to provide information on basic aspects of the same when required.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Knows and manages the specific skills to communicate with patients and relatives in case of urgent or emerging pathology.

  • Knows and properly uses the personal protective equipment (PPE) and the action procedures for the prevention of accidents in relation to himself and the rest of the members of his team.

  • Know the organizational and operational models of the relationship between medical, nursing and emergency technicians in out-of-hospital medical emergency services.

  • Knows how to carry out the procedures to activate emergency health resources.

  • Knows how to handle the patient in an emergency situation: respiratory arrest and cardiorespiratory arrest.

  • Knows how to handle immobilization devices for the transfer of the serious trauma patient.

  • Knows how to manages the patient in cardiologic, vascular, respiratory and neurological emergencies.

  • Manages the patient in gynecological and obstetric emergency situations, including eutocic delivery assistance.

  • Manages patients in paediatric emergencies.

  • Manages the patient in emergency traumatological situations. 

  • Manages the patient in analgesia, sedation and relaxation procedures in emergencies and urgent care.

  • Knows hoy to perform: compressive and functional bandages, plaster casts. 

  • It is able to perform, indicate or derive appropriately: wound care and sutures, bite treatment, burn treatment.

 

Syllabus

This subject involves the approach to the integral application, in real circumstances, of the knowledge and skills acquired, under the supervision of a practice tutor, through rotation by the SEM Medical Emergency System.

  • Outside hospital emergencies: Mobile units and coordinating centre of the SEM Medical Emergency System (4 ECTS credits)

The student must prepare and deliver a final report of practices that must contain at least the following information:

  • Personal data of the student.
  • Centers and services through which it has been rotate
  • Concrete and detailed description of the tasks carried out in each service over time of rotation.
  • Evaluation of the tasks carried out with the knowledge and skills acquired.
  • Relate the problems and the procedures followed to solve them.
  • Identification of the contributions that the practices have meant in terms of learning.
  • Evaluation of practices and proposals for improvement.

Teaching and learning activities

The teaching methodology of the Practicum combines:

  • Problem-based learning
  • Practical learning by performance 
  • Practical learning by model observation.
The Internship rotations develop following an individual program in a network of healthcare centers specifically selected for their care and research activity and their potential for the training professionals.    This individual program is communicated to the student at the beginning of the academic year, and changes can be made at the request of the student under certain conditions and requirements.    In each practical rotation the student is tutored by a work placement tutor, who will be a health professional qualified for clinical practice and teaching, who will be in charge of guiding the student in their practical learning.    The work placement Coordinator will carry out individualized and continous monitoring of the student during the development of the internship. As long as the pandemic circumstances derived from COVID advise the limitation of personal contact, the work placement Coordinator will maintain continuous contact with the centers and intership tutors, as well as with the students through online meetings with Meet, to guarantee the learning and satisfaction of the student during the internship experience, in addition to consulting doubts and/or solving conflicts. 

Daily attendance at the practices is mandatory. If for justified reasons it is not possible to go to the practices one day, the student must notify the Internship Coordinator, who will evaluate if the lack is justified and if it is necessary and it is possible to reschedule it.

If for reasons arising from the COVID-19 pandemic it is necessary to suspend or interrupt any rotation, the Internship Coordinator will reschedule this rotation to the affected students whenever possible.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In general terms, the practices will be evaluated taking into account the individual activity of the student, the evaluation in the workplace by the tutors/professionals, as well as the elaboration by the student of the Report of Internship.


During the internship the student will have to prepare the Internship Report that will be delivered the day he finishes them. The delivery will be telematic through the virtual classroom.
The student will have to prepare and deliver a Internship Report that must contain 2 clinical cases seen during the Practicum and that would have aroused a special interest, developing aspects such as:

  • Approach of the clinical case
  • List of the procedures carried out for their approach and resolution
  • Evaluation of the tasks carried out with the knowledge and skills acquired
  • Identification of the contributions that in terms of learning have meant for the student
  • Improvement aspects

Each internship tutor of the student will carry out the evaluation of the students by him tutored according to some evaluation criteria adapted, aligned with the objectives and the learning criteria established in the academic report for the Practicum.
The final grade of the Practicum will be determined by:

  • 60%: Average grade of all the evaluations carried out by the Practice Tutors in each of the rotations.
  • 30%: Average grade of the Practicum Practice Report.
  • 10%: Assistance and individual effort.
