Introduction
In the subject 'Professional English for Journalism I', students will work their ability to write texts for television and to produce a news magazine.
Pre-course requirements
Knowledge of English language. Use of the audiovisual and editing material available at the university.
Objectives
This subject is aimed at preparing students for the Newsrooms and be able to write and edit in formal English under the pressure of time. The subject addresses two of the most critical points that a journalist is expected to have: critical thinking and production skills. This is why the subject's case studies are closely tied to the media industry. So not only will you be practicing your writing and editing skills, but you will also develop a high level of critical thinking on topics that affect journalism in a direct way.

Learning outcomes of the subject
Students will have to be able to produce a news magazine in English. All the final content will have to be written and prepared in different groups. Good use of journalistic language in English will be taken into account, as well as the final result of the product in terms of image.
Syllabus
The subject is divided into three blocks:
1. Theory and practice of writing for television (with practice sessions on live connection, live connection with interview and writing of kyrons).
2. Preparation of the script of a magazine program for television.
3. Production, recording and post-production of this program.
Teaching and learning activities
In person
The subject is divided into practical sessions and theoretical sessions and the production of a television program.

| Coaching. Monitoring how students learn the content of the subject, either individually or in groups. In the coaching sessions, mistakes will be corrected, queries answered, and exercises and activities to achieve the established objectives will be suggested. | 0.8 |
| Seminar. This activity will consist of taking an in-depth look at specific up-to-date topics in a monographic manner-in some cases these topics will have been debated socially-, via active work in small groups. | 0,6 |
| Practical workshop. A highly practical working activity, where students can acquire skills that are practical or also theoretical (intellectual skills, logical skills, critical skills, intellectual learning skills, study skills, quoting skills, etc). | 0,6 |
| Lectures. In lectures, lecturers/professors not only transmit content or knowledge, but also, and above all else, attitudes, motivation, skills and values, etc. They also ensure that participants can express their opinions and arguments to the other students. | 2,0 |
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Live connection, live connection with interview and writing of kyrons: 30%
Script writing: 30%
Production, recording and post-production of the program: 40%
Second assignment work:
Submit a 10-minute audiovisual report, in English, on a specific topic (examples: tourism in Barcelona, the increase in rental prices in the city, etc.). This report must be produced, written, filmed, and post-produced by the student. Video and audio equipment and the technical resources offered by Digital Media Studios are available. The report must feature the student's voice-over as narration and include statements (recorded on the street with anonymous people) and interviews with experts on the subject (in which the student appears on screen).
