Introduction

This subject focuses on the development of structured treatment planning skills in endodontics through the guided discussion of clinical cases in an online learning environment. The course aims to train students to integrate diagnostic data, scientific evidence, and clinical judgment to design predictable and patient-centered treatment plans. Through systematic case discussions, students will learn to evaluate different therapeutic alternatives, assess risks and prognosis, and justify their clinical decisions according to biological principles and current scientific literature. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary coordination and comprehensive treatment planning.

Pre-course requirements

Students must have completed the foundational subjects of the master’s program related to endodontic diagnosis, pathology, and basic clinical concepts. This prior training ensures that students possess the necessary knowledge to analyze clinical information and actively participate in structured case discussions

Objectives

The main objective of this subject is to train students to design comprehensive and evidence-based endodontic treatment plans through the discussion and analysis of clinical cases. By the end of the course, the student will be able to: • Interpret clinical and radiographic findings to establish accurate diagnoses. • Design structured and individualized endodontic treatment plans. • Evaluate different therapeutic options and select the most appropriate approach. • Assess prognostic factors and potential risks associated with endodontic treatments. • Integrate endodontic treatment planning within a multidisciplinary dental context. • Justify treatment decisions using scientific evidence and clinical guidelines. • Communicate treatment plans clearly and coherently in written and oral formats.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

CN01 – Identify with precision the most advanced technical processes related to endodontics. • CN03 – Carry out a critical analysis to rigorously assimilate different scientific methodologies. • CN04 – Recognize the origin and development of oral pathologies based on the transversal interrelation of biomedical sciences. • CP04 – Generate work synergies with professionals from other areas and disciplines. • HB02 – Apply different sources of scientific information depending on the clinical context. • HB03 – Manage the complexity of each endodontic case. • HB04 – Classify endodontic cases according to their level of difficulty. • HB05 – Apply multidisciplinary knowledge in endodontic treatment planning. • HB12 – Plan appropriate protocols in cases of endodontic failure. • HB16 – Integrate three-dimensional radiological analysis in treatment planning. • HB20 – Prepare appropriate endodontic treatment plans based on exhaustive analysis

Learning outcomes of the subject

Upon successful completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. Analyze endodontic clinical cases using a structured treatment planning approach. 2. Establish comprehensive diagnoses based on clinical and radiographic data. 3. Design predictable and evidence-based treatment plans. 4. Compare different therapeutic options and justify the selected approach. 5. Identify prognostic factors and potential complications. 6. Present and defend treatment plans using appropriate scientific terminology. 7. Integrate ethical and patient-centered considerations into treatment planning

Syllabus

his subject is based on the discussion of endodontic clinical cases as a tool for learning treatment planning. Students will analyze documented cases including radiographs, CBCT scans, clinical photographs, and videos to simulate real clinical scenarios. The syllabus includes: • Diagnostic criteria in endodontics • Treatment planning strategies for primary endodontic treatments • Decision-making in retreatment cases • Prognostic assessment in endodontics • Treatment planning for teeth with periapical pathology • Interdisciplinary treatment planning (restorative, periodontal, orthodontic considerations) • Patient-related factors and ethical considerations in treatment planning

Bibliography and resources

The bibliography for this subject will be based on the core literature covered throughout the master’s program. Students will be required to consult updated scientific articles, systematic reviews, and clinical guidelines related to endodontic treatment planning. Additional resources include: • Recorded expert lectures. • Access to scientific journals and databases. • Clinical case libraries available through the virtual learning platform. These resources support continuous learning and ensure alignment with current best practices in endodontics.
