Introduction

This subject represents the advanced level of clinical concepts in endodontics. Building upon the knowledge and reasoning skills developed in Clinical Concepts I, it focuses on integrating complex clinical scenarios, interdisciplinary approaches, and evidence-based decision-making. Students will engage in case-based learning to enhance their ability to manage advanced endodontic situations and to synthesize theoretical knowledge with practical problem-solving.

Pre-course requirements

Completion of Clinical Concepts I is required. Students should have a foundational understanding of pulp biology, periapical pathology, diagnostic procedures, treatment planning principles, and basic endodontic techniques

Objectives

The main objective of this subject is to strengthen students’ ability to apply clinical concepts in advanced, complex endodontic cases and to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge for optimal patient care. By the end of the course, the student will be able to: • Analyze complex endodontic cases using advanced clinical reasoning. • Integrate interdisciplinary knowledge into treatment planning and case management. • Apply evidence-based concepts to predict and evaluate treatment outcomes. • Anticipate potential complications and propose preventive strategies. • Critically evaluate treatment success and failure. • Communicate clinical reasoning clearly and effectively.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

CN01 – Identify and apply advanced technical and biological processes in endodontics. • CN03 – Critically analyze and assimilate complex scientific methodologies. • CN04 – Recognize and understand the development of complex oral pathologies. • CP04 – Collaborate with other dental professionals in integrated case management. • HB03 – Manage complex endodontic cases effectively. • HB04 – Classify and justify advanced endodontic cases. • HB05 – Apply multidisciplinary knowledge to advanced clinical scenarios. • HB12 – Plan appropriate protocols in cases of complex endodontic challenges. • HB20 – Develop advanced, comprehensive, and evidence-based treatment plans.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Upon successful completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. Synthesize knowledge from multiple clinical concepts for complex case management. 2. Apply advanced diagnostic and prognostic reasoning. 3. Develop and justify comprehensive treatment plans for challenging cases. 4. Integrate interdisciplinary approaches into endodontic decision-making. 5. Evaluate outcomes and plan follow-up strategies based on evidence. 6. Communicate complex clinical reasoning with precision and clarity

Syllabus

Integration of clinical and biological concepts • Advanced endodontic case analysis • Interdisciplinary approaches (restorative, surgical, periodontal) • Advanced diagnostic reasoning and prognostic assessment • Risk management and complication prevention • Evidence-based evaluation of treatment outcomes • Follow-up strategies and long-term maintenance

Bibliography and resources

Students are required to consult advanced textbooks, peer-reviewed articles, and consensus statements related to complex endodontic cases. Resources include: • Recorded expert lectures and case demonstrations. • Access to online journals and databases. • Comprehensive case repositories through the virtual learning platform. These resources support evidence-based learning and reinforce the integration of advanced clinical concepts.
