Introduction

Periodontal plastic surgery is defined as “surgical procedures performed to prevent or correct anatomical, developmental, traumatic, and pathological defects of the gingiva, alveolar mucosa, or bone.”

The hands-on session aims to provide students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge about different surgical procedures for the treatment of mucogingival conditions and problems.

Objectives

The hands-on mucogingival surgery course aims to provide students with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge about different surgical procedures for treating mucogingival conditions and problems.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • Apply different surgical treatment options and techniques for the correction of mucogingival defects and problems in each clinical situation.
  • Diagnose morphological alterations in periodontal and oral tissues that may compromise periodontal health, function, or aesthetics, and identify and treat conditions that require surgical intervention.
  • Determine the patient’s aesthetic expectations and establish the extent to which these requirements can be met.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Become familiar with surgical anatomy and soft tissue manipulation.
  • Identify the usefulness and application of each surgical instrument for the various steps of each technique.
  • Perform a proper diagnosis and treatment plan and carry out step-by-step surgical procedures for treating mucogingival problems.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



A theoretical-practical seminar where different surgical techniques will be taught and practiced step by step.
The practical training will be performed on pig heads, with access to the necessary surgical, microsurgical instruments, and sutures.
