Introduction

Addictive behaviours constitute a major public health problem and have experienced a significant increase in recent years. These disorders usually start around adolescence, with consumption behaviours appearing at increasingly earlier ages, resulting in the development of the disorder among children and adolescents, which may continue into adulthood.

On the one hand, addictions to substances (such as tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, heroin, designer drugs, etc.) and, on the other, addictive behaviours (addiction to gambling, videogames, shopping, etc.) may lead to several consequences at a personal, family and social level, and result in high costs for mental health services.

This course intends to broaden the students’ knowledge of the different addictive behaviours, incorporating the gender perspective, as well as the series of devices for treating and preventing addiction.

Lastly, discussion will also focus on the main intervention models and therapeutic resources for professionals.

Objectives

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To broaden students’ knowledge of addiction treatment and prevention.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

  • To distinguish the broad range of addictions, identifying both addictions to substances and their effects and the various addictive behaviours.
  • To incorporate the gender perspective into the conceptualisation, treatment and prevention of addictions.
  • To understand the psychological processes that encourage the appearance and maintenance of the addictive process.
  • To become familiar with the various addictive behaviour treatment assistance resources from the Drug Dependency Care Network (XAD) and the regional mental health network.
  • To learn about the different intervention protocols and their application in both children and young people and adults.
  • To learn about intervention and treatment programmes for dual pathology.
  • To present a paper on the prevention of addictive behaviours.
  • To learn to determine which intervention is necessary based on the person’s situation.
  • To gain a deeper understanding of the therapeutic tools that facilitate the rehabilitation of addicted persons.
  • To raise awareness of the role of professional teams that work with addictions.
