Introduction
The Contemporary Literature Review course aims to deepen students’ understanding of current scientific knowledge in periodontology through the reading, analysis, interpretation, and critical discussion of contemporary scientific literature.
Advanced training in periodontology requires not only knowledge of the available diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, but also the ability to critically assess the evidence supporting them, identify the methodological limitations of studies, and integrate new scientific knowledge into clinical decision-making.
Pre-course requirements
It is necessary to approve the literature review subject.
Objectives
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Identify the scientific or clinical question addressed by a publication.
- Recognize the methodological design used in the main types of studies.
- Critically analyse the methodology of a scientific article.
- Identify strengths, limitations, and potential sources of bias.
- Appropriately interpret the main statistical results presented in the periodontal literature.
- Distinguish between statistical significance and clinical relevance.
- Critically compare different publications addressing the same question.
- Assess the consistency of findings across the available body of evidence.
- Relate research findings to periodontal practice.
- Justify diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using scientific literature.
- Identify recent advances and current controversies in periodontology.
- Develop an attitude of continuous scientific updating.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
Students should be able to:
- Critically analyse scientific articles.
- Justify the surgical and non-surgical procedures and treatments performed in a clinical case based on the scientific literature.
- Apply the theoretical knowledge acquired to clinical practice.
- Identify statistical methods and their applications in the field of Periodontology.
- Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research models, identifying their main advantages and limitations.
Syllabus
First quarter: Resective periodontal surgery
Second quarter: Mucogingival surgery
Third quarter: Guided tissue regeneration and ridge preservation augmentation
Teaching and learning activities
In person
The class methodology will be the following: each student will read and review five articles per class and each article will be presented in a power point document (aim, methods and materials, results, discussion and conclusions). The faculty will show clinical cases related with the articles.
During the seminar, the following activities will be carried out:
- Identification of the study question.
- Methodological analysis.
- Interpretation of the results.
- Assessment of the limitations.
- Discussion of clinical relevance.
- Comparison with other publications.
- Discussion between students and faculty.
- Formulation of a reasoned conclusion.
The class is an activity based on the active participation of students through debates and discussions, aimed at learning, interpreting, resolving doubts, reflecting, and comparing different viewpoints.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
The lecture evaluation will be done at the end of the trimester with an essay examination. Students must obtain a minimum score of 7 points to pass the exam.
