Introduction

The Research in Endodontics III module represents the advanced phase of the research block, focusing on execution, data analysis, scientific writing, and knowledge transfer. While in previous phases the student addresses methodological planning and technological integration, this course enables professionals to carry out rigorous data collection, statistical processing of clinical and experimental findings, and the final preparation of a publishable manuscript for high-impact journals (JCR/SJR).

Pre-course requirements

Having completed and passed Research in Endodontics I and Research in Endodontics II.

Objectives

  • Execute previously validated clinical, in vitro, or ex vivo research protocols.

  • Master the management and cleaning of biomedical databases in endodontics.

  • Apply appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical tests tailored to the methodological design.

  • Write a complete scientific article following international guidelines.

  • Evaluate the peer-review process and prepare response letters to reviewers.

  • Understand the mechanisms of technology transfer, patents, and intellectual property in dentistry.

  • Present and defend scientific results orally and visually using scientific communication formats.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN01 - Accurately identify the most advanced technical processes related to endodontics.

  • CN03 - Understand the methodology of scientific research in health sciences.

  • CP01 - Integrate scientific evidence into clinical decision-making and the development of research projects.

  • HB01 - Design and execute research projects applied to endodontics.

  • HB02 - Interpret analytical and statistical results from biomedical studies.

  • HB15 - Clearly communicate scientific findings to both specialized and general audiences.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students will be able to:

  • Collect and organize experimental/clinical data using specific IT tools without measurement bias.

  • Select and interpret statistical tests (parametric and non-parametric) applied to endodontics.

  • Write a structured scientific article suitable for submission to indexed journals.

  • Address comments from external reviewers using scientific rigor.

  • Synthesize and publicly defend a research project in oral communication or poster format.

Syllabus

Executive Phase and Data Collection in Endodontics

  • Standardization of measurements (inter- and intra-observer calibration, Kappa index).

  • Design of Case Report Forms (CRFs) and electronic databases (REDCap/Excel).

  • Management of biological samples and traceability in in vitro and ex vivo studies.

Applied Statistical Analysis

  • Descriptive and inferential statistics in endodontics.

Scientific Writing and Publication

  • Writing strategies for Title, Abstract, and Keywords.

  • Introduction: rationale for the knowledge gap and hypothesis.

  • Material and Methods: adherence to reporting guidelines (PRILEAD, CONSORT, STROBE).

  • Results: visual presentation through high-resolution tables and figures.

  • Discussion and Conclusions: interpretation, limitations, and clinical applicability.

Editing Process, Translation, and Advanced Ethics

  • Journal selection (Impact factors, JCR, SJR, Open Access).

  • Peer-review management: point-by-point response to reviewers.

  • Intellectual property, patents in endodontic materials, and technology transfer.

  • Publication ethics: responsible authorship, plagiarism, and declaration of conflicts of interest.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

  • Lectures / Theoretical classes: Presentation of content on statistical analysis, article structure, and technology transfer.

  • Case study method and writing seminars: Analysis of real articles, identification of common errors, and simulation of responses to reviewers.

  • Small group tutorials: Direct supervision of each student's manuscript progress.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

General Evaluation Criteria:

  • Rigor in data treatment and statistical analysis.

  • Quality of scientific writing following the IMRaD format and applicable reporting guidelines.

  • Critical ability to argue the discussion and defend the results.

  • Compliance with ethical standards and scientific integrity.

Fully In-Person Modality

  • Evaluation of the Draft Manuscript / Scientific Article (50%): Assessment of structure, writing, and data analysis.

  • Oral Defense / Conference-Style Presentation (30%): Public presentation of the work with visual support.

  • Continuous Assessment and Practical Workshops (20%): Resolution of statistical analysis exercises in the computer lab.
