Introduction

Students attend face-to-face classes for the implant prosthesis subject.

 

Lectures are given by the teaching staff, with a total of 14 topics related to the bases of implant prostheses.

 

The students to whom the subject is taught are MUORE 1 and IMOS 1.

 

Reviews of classic and current literature will also be carried out, with oral presentations by the students.

 

At the end of each theoretical session, clinical cases that treat CUO are presented to discuss treatment options.

Pre-course requirements

Knowledge of the anatomical bases of the stomatognathic system and dental prostheses 

 

Objectives

- Knowledge of prosthetic implantology.

- Know the necessary attachments for prosthetic implants and correct diagnosis and case planning.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN01 - Relate advanced and specialized concepts in oral surgery, implantology and oral rehabilitation.
  • CN02 - Define advanced concepts related to surgical anatomy applied to the oral cavity.
  • CN03 - Identify the different types of surgical interventions, aseptic techniques and types of healing of hard and soft tissues.
  • CN04 - Recognize the origin and development of the different pathologies that affect the oral cavity, based on the transversal interrelation of biomedical sciences.
  • CP01 - Plan and rehabilitate patients with unitary, partial and total edentulism with an aesthetic and functional result (adjusting the occlusion and integration of the prosthesis in the patient's mouth and face as a whole).
  • CP02 - Diagnose and treat patients' oral cavity lesions conservatively or surgically, as well as their subsequent follow-up.
  • CP03 - Resolve complications that may arise before, during and after an oral surgery intervention.
  • CP04 - Generate work synergies with professionals from other areas and disciplines by designing joint strategies for action in oral surgery and implantology patients.
  • CP05 - Apply advanced surgical and rehabilitative treatments in oral implantology appropriately to any patient, respecting the fundamental rights of equality between men and women, and the promotion of human rights and the values ​​of a culture of peace and democratic values; using language that avoids androcentrism and stereotypes.
  • CP06 - Critically evaluate research and current advances in oral surgery and implantology, by evaluating methodologies and, if appropriate, proposing new approaches/hypotheses.
  • CP07 - Treat mucogingival defects around teeth and implants with appropriate diagnosis.
  • CP08 - Carry out, through prior preparation, an aesthetic and functional oral rehabilitation treatment plan.
  • HB01 - Adequately perform the anamnesis and physical examination by systems, face, neck and oral cavity to complete the clinical history, including good graphic documentation (photography and video).
  • HB02 - Interpret the different radiological examinations in the field of oral surgery and implantology.
  • HB03 - Perform a differential diagnosis of oral pathological lesions and treat them surgically if necessary.
  • HB04 - Handle surgical instruments, as well as appliances related to implantology and oral surgery.
  • HB05 - Handle the most modern digital tools for computer-aided planning, design and manufacturing.
  • HB06 - Apply the different existing techniques to perform complex dental extractions.
  • HB07 - Apply the different reconstructive and regenerative techniques of hard and soft tissues.
  • HB08 - Treat diseases associated with dental implants by applying appropriate maintenance guidelines.
  • HB09 - Write and publish a scientific article in an indexed journal in your field of knowledge.
  • HB10 - Treat anxiety and pain resulting from surgical treatments in the field of implantology and oral surgery.
  • HB11 - Prepare communications and posters at different national and international conferences related to oral surgery and implantology.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • - Biomedical Sciences - LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Identify the main anatomical structures of the head and neck. 2. Recognize macro or microscopic anomalies or alterations that cause pathology in the oral cavity. 3. Identify the different pathogenic microorganisms by applying the necessary laboratory techniques. 4. Make a diagnosis of the different pathologies of the oral cavity based on the interpretation of the results obtained. 5. Analyze and interpret the results obtained to determine the impact of other complex systems. 6. Discuss which actions or drugs are most suitable for the treatment of diagnosed pathologies related to the oral cavity.
  • - Oral Surgery and Implantology - LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Perform advanced dissection techniques 2. Make a correct diagnosis of oral medical-surgical pathology and implantology 3. Diagnose oral cavity lesions and the appropriate diagnostic protocols 4. Identify the surgical techniques to place dental implants in different indications 5. Perform dental extractions with different degrees of complexity. 6. Plan surgery, implantology and prosthesis digitally 7. Perform different reconstructive/regenerative techniques in the oral cavity, both hard and soft tissues. 8. Present clinical cases and treatment plans in public and their argued defense
  • - Complementary Specialties - LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Work in a multidisciplinary way, especially with the prosthetics, periodontics, orthodontics and endodontics departments. 2. Interpret complementary radiological examinations, especially in a CBCT computed tomography. 3. Simulate surgical and prosthetic interventions in synthetic, animal or virtual models. 4. Make a rehabilitative treatment plan and its alternatives. 5. Know the different diagnostic techniques in oral rehabilitation 6. Diagnose and surgically treat periodontal disease 7. Identify the concepts of dental clinic management 8. Describe the materials and techniques associated with endodontic surgery 9. Simulate surgical interventions in artificial, animal or digital models.

Apply appropriate surgical techniques to perform simple and complex dental extractions. 4. Place implants at different times after extraction and different times to load them. 5. Prepare a sterile surgical field following sterilization/disinfection standards 6. Work in a hospital/outpatient environment with sedation and general anesthesia 7. Perform different reconstructive/regenerative techniques in the oral cavity, both hard and soft tissues. 8. Resolve complications of surgical treatments

  • - Master's thesis - LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Describe the different phases of the research process. 2. Access the documentary sources identified in the bibliographic search, downloading the complete documents for evaluation. 3. Write a scientific summary for the preliminary presentation of results at conferences and conferences, as well as prepare an oral communication and/or poster. 3. Design a research protocol based on the scientific method. 4. Conduct clinical or laboratory research, applying new techniques learned and managing time and resources. 5. Adequately write the introduction, justification, objectives, hypotheses, state of the art, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions of your master's thesis. 6. Identify the different types of scientific articles, their structure and characteristics and their publication standards. 7. Critically evaluate the scientific literature found

THEORETICAL PROGRAMME

LESSON 1. INTRODUCTION TO PROSTHESES ON IMPLANTS.

Terminology in implant prosthetics.

Differential features between an implant and a natural tooth.

Implant characteristics, different shapes and surfaces.

Biomechanics, different types of forces and their effect on the implant.

The different phases in the development of treatment.

Different types of prostheses. 

LESSON 2. DIAGNOSIS AND SELECTION OF THE PATIENT  

History and examination of the patient.

Utilities of the study models.

Most used complementary explorations and why.

Know the absolute and relative indications and contraindications. 

LESSON 3. WAX, RADIOLOGICAL AND SURGICAL GUIDE

Importance of diagnostic wax and its applications.

Conceptualising the terms radiologic guidance and surgical guide.

Importance of radiological guidance in planning treatment.

Radio diagnostic tests and their indications.

LESSON 4. SELECTION OF THE BASES

Factors that define the type of base used.

Characteristics and impressions.

Screw-retained versus cemented prosthesis. 

LESSON 5. IMPRESSION TAKING

Differences between natural teeth and implants and their importance in taking impressions.

LESSON 9. COMPLETE FIXED PROSTHESIS

Know the different types of prosthesis to be performed depending on the materials and prostheses to be made. Concept of Hybrid Prosthesis and Full Arch.

Identify the different attachments and materials used in the preparation of a complete fixed prosthesis.

Know which type of occlusion must give to the implant-supported fixed prostheses. 

LESSON 10. OVERDENTURES IMPLANT RETAINED

Conceptualising an overdenture.

Clinical indications and contraindications.

Conceptualising the terms of implant-retained overdenture and overdenture implant- mucous supported.

Practice of activation of an overdenture with anchors.

Know the clinical sequence to follow in the preparation.

PRACTICAL PROGRAMME 

1. Fixings Closure screws. Healing pillars. Transepithelial pillars

Pillars for cement-retained implants Transfers and replicas.

External and internal connection.

Objectives: To recognise the fixings used for different implant systems, including their form and function, and to familiarise oneself with how they are used.

2. Taking implant impressions. Open and closed tray. Direct impression and transepithelial impression. Splints

Objectives: To understand every way of taking implant impressions and have the knowledge to undertake said impressions.

3. Planning a case. Diagnostic wax-up. Radiographic guide and surgical guide

Objectives: To plan several cases using a diagnostic wax-up, then create a surgical and radiographic guide.

4. Computer-aided dental implant planning. A guide to surgical guides

Objectives: To understand navigation systems and how to use them to plan cases

5. Planning cases. Mapping and surgery on models.

Objectives: Create a model that reproduces the soft gingiva and correct 3D positioning of the implant. Creation of guides using the implant model.  

 

6. Unitary implants. Step by step. Screw-retained and cemented implants. Pillars for unitary implants. Materials. Provisional prostheses over multiple implants.

Objectives: To understand the steps to installing a unitary prosthesis Techniques for preparing provisional prostheses over unitary implants.

7. How to create a full arch prosthesis Occlusion rims fixed to implants.

Testing of implant-fixed teeth. Selection of transepithelial pillars. Screw-retained implant test. Materials. Provisional prostheses over multiple implants

Objectives: To understand how to installing multiple prostheses. Techniques for creating an occlusion rim and fixed teeth testing strategies. Selection of transepithelial pillars from different manufacturers. Provisional over multiple prostheses and immediate loading.

8. CAD/CAM protocol. Impression copings and scan bodies. Model scanning. CAD/CAM pillar design for unitary implants. Multiple CAD/CAM structures. Assessing dental composite

Objectives: To familiarise oneself with CAD/CAM prostheses. Understand the different systems for obtaining three-dimensional virtual models. Introduction to attachment design using CAD/CAM.

9. Contact with the laboratory. Laboratory visits.

10. Laboratory photography

Objective: To take photographs of implants in the different laboratory phases. To submit a photobook of the time spent working in the laboratory.
