Introduction

The course Public Speaking constitutes an initial practical approach to the development of oral communication skills and body language in public and in English. It is conceived as an introductory, progressive and highly practical training experience aimed at helping students gain confidence in expressing themselves in English before an audience.

Pre-course requirements

No specific prior knowledge is required.

Objectives

  • To progressively overcome fear or insecurity when speaking in public.

  • To improve pronunciation, diction and intonation in English.

  • To learn how to modulate the voice appropriately during an oral presentation.

  • To develop basic habits of body posture, eye contact and non-verbal communication.

  • To organize a simple and brief oral intervention.

  • To gain confidence in participating actively in academic and early professional settings.

Syllabus

1. Introduction to public speaking
  • What it means to speak in public.

  • Stage fright and initial insecurity.

  • Confidence as a trainable skill.

  • Basic rules of behaviour before an audience.

2. Voice and pronunciation
  • Breathing and voice projection.

  • Volume, pace and pauses.

  • Intonation in English.

  • Basic pronunciation and diction for Journalism students.

3. Body language
  • Posture and stage presence.

  • Natural gestures and controlled movements.

  • Eye contact with the audience.

  • Facial expression and non-verbal coherence.

4. Short oral presentations
  • How to begin and end a simple intervention.

  • Basic organization of ideas in a short presentation.

  • Use of simple visual aids.

  • Personal, academic and everyday-topic presentations.

5. Practical training
  • Reading aloud.

  • Controlled improvisation exercises.

  • Short individual presentations.

  • Recording and basic analysis of oral interventions.

  • Feedback among classmates and teaching staff.

  • The art of improvisation.
