Introduction

The Sociology in Audiovisual Communication course aims to give students scientific tools to analyse and understand society as a whole. It also helps them develop critical thinking and apply it to audiovisual communication and different professional areas.

The main goal of sociology is to understand society. This is essential for planning, analysing and creating high-quality audiovisual products. Sociology offers scientific theories and methods that help students study society and understand the key factors that influence the world we live in.

The course provides theoretical and practical tools to develop a critical and responsible point of view. Its goal is to train professionals who can understand and explain social reality and create high-quality audiovisual content that has an impact on society.

Objectives

Knowledge:

- Learn about the reality of the science of sociology and the major theoretical paradigms.
- Understand the role of audiovisual communication in cultural education and society. 
- Understand the social context of the postmodern era to create optimal communication products.
 
Skills and attitudes:

- Use argument, criticism and creativity in making speeches. 
- Develop an attitude of respect for the diversity of opinions in debates. 
- Reflect on the responsibility of professional in communication in building a fairer and supportive social environment.

- Identify social trends in communication creations. 

- Distinguish elements of cultural training and socialisation in the communicative products.

- Indicate the different possibilities of social influence of the communicative elements used in the work. 

- Awareness of the tools of sociological research for use in communication.

Syllabus

Sociological theory, origins, modernity, perspectives and postmodernity. The dynamics of power and spaces of individual and collective subjectivity.

Block 1. Introduction to sociology in communication

Block 2. The origin of sociology and the main theoretical paradigms

Block 3. Main sociological perspectives

Block 4. Understanding 21st century society: culture, economy and politics in the postmodern era

TRAINING ACTIVITY ECTS CREDITS
Coaching. Monitoring how students learn the content of the subject, either individually or in groups. In the coaching sessions, mistakes will be corrected, queries answered, and exercises and activities to achieve the established objectives will be suggested. 0.2
Focused Praxis. Handing in occasional exercises to learn theory through practice. 1.4
Seminar. This activity will consist of taking an in-depth look at specific up-to-date topics in a monographic manner-in some cases these topics will have been debated socially-, via active work in small groups. 0.6
Lectures. In lectures, lecturers/professors not only transmit content or knowledge, but also, and above all else, attitudes, motivation, skills and values, etc. They also ensure that participants can express their opinions and arguments to the other students. 2.8
Peer learning. The aim of this activity is to ensure that students gain the ability to analyse and be critical. One way of achieving this is by correcting their peers' exercises and results, etc. Each student will be evaluated twice: as both a recipient and a transmitter of critical knowledge. 1

FIRST CALL 

The evaluation will be continuous. Attendance and participation are required. It will consist of two exams with a value of 70% of the note, plus the completion of practices that will be 30%. Some of these practices will be done in class and others at home as exercises. It is necessary to pass the practices and the exam average to pass the subject.
