Introduction

Written Communication II is a 6 ECTS credit subject taught in the second semester of the first year of the degree in Journalism.

Its aim is to provide students with the knowledge of journalistic genres: news, features stories and interview.

Pre-course requirements

No pre-course requirements are needed to enrol in this subject.

  • Evaluate outcomes and process and point out ways para improve learning process.
  • Share evaluation tasks between teachers and students.
  • Incorporate self-assessment proceses and assessment among peers.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students will: 1. Speak and write correctly. 2. Have greater command of language, creative ability, and be able to use it effectively according to their objectives. 3. Demonstrate knowledge and mastery of different journalistic genres (news, interview, feature).

  • THE NEWS STORY: STRUCTURE AND WRITING
  • Concept and basic elements of journalistic writing.
  • The headline.
  • The lead.
  • The introduction Relevant aspects (style, punctuation, vocabulary, focus…).
  • THE INTERVIEW
  • Planning and approach Types (informative, personality, in-depth…).
  • Choosing the interviewee 
  • Editing.
  • THE REPORT
  • Information-interpretation.
  • Main characteristics.
  • Style and focus.

Focused Praxis. Handing in occasional exercises to learn theory through practice. 1.7
E-learning. Virtual learning based on ICT. 0.3
Lectures. In lectures, lecturers/professors not only transmit content or knowledge, but also, and above all else, attitudes, motivation, skills and values, etc. They also ensure that participants can express their opinions and arguments to the other students. 1.8
Practical workshop. A highly practical working activity, where students can acquire skills that are practical or also theoretical (intellectual skills, logical skills, critical skills, intellectual learning skills, study skills, quoting skills, etc). 0.6
Lab. Working groups that combine theory and practice. The aim of these is not to undertake already known techniques, but instead to make progress that is both theoretical and technical. These Lab sessions will culminate in the creation of a professional or semi-professional product. 1.0
Practical workshop. A highly practical working activity, where students can acquire skills that are practical or also theoretical (intellectual skills, logical skills, critical skills, intellectual learning skills, study skills, quoting skills, etc). 0.6

Evaluation systems and criteria

Proyecto final o examen parcial (oral-escrito-teórico-práctico) de cada Unidad/Bloque: 20% de la nota por Unidad/Bloque. Estos corresponden a: Bloque 20%: Géneros periodísticos Bloque 20%: Noticias Bloque 20%: Entrevista Bloque 20%: Crónica Bloque: Entrevista El trabajo realizado durante la clase contribuirá a la evaluación final (y quedará registrado en las rúbricas correspondientes) de cada Bloque/Unidad. Asistencia y participación en clases: 20% (a criterio del profesor). TOTAL 100% En la segunda convocatoria y sucesivas: examen teórico-práctico 100%.
