Introduction
The aging of the population in developed countries has led to major changes in health policies adopted by different Governments. The increase in life expectancy, generates an increase in demand for health care, that means an improvement of the quality of life during this life stage.
Due to the physiological and psychological changes that originate the prolongation of life, the care required by this group of population have unique characteristics that require professionals specifically trained to address the health problems of the elderly, of their caregivers, family and community. It is therefore necessary to train nurses who, while also being prepared for general nursing, can take the care of geriatric patients and are prepared to face the complexity of the needs presented by this age group and their families in a situation of worsening chronic health issues, as well as tools to work in a multidisciplinary team.
"Age and Dependency" is a subject that gives continuity during the 4th year of the Degree, to the course "Care for the Elderly", taught in 3rd year of Nursing. It puts the stress on the care of the elderly from a clinical and holistic perspective, focusing on a interdisciplinary care of the geriatric patient in a critical condition. It also offers an anthropological and social perspective about
aging promoting understanding of the experience of illness and dependency in the elderly person and support in the face of the impact on family life. On the other hand, it addresses the emotional management, essential for self-care of nurses who take care for the elderly and their families.
In this subject, three main topics will be addressed: immigrant caregivers, physiotherapy in the elderly (aimed at developing autonomy and self-care). Likewise, work will be done on the topic chosen on the first day of class for the Seminar on Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly. Expert speakers will be invited, the conference will be organised, and the work of the subject will be presented in the form of papers at the conference. The conference will be led by students, who will be guided and supervised at all times by the subject coordinator.

For this it is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and the students will be distributed in groups of 2-4 depending on the number of students.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Evaluation:
The course will be assessed through continuous assessment. The final grade will be calculated based on the following activities and weightings:
- Written group assignment (10%)
- Oral presentation of the group assignment in class (10%)
- Assessment of the written group assignment by the Congerence Evaluation Panel (10%)
- Presentation of the communication at the Conference (10%)
- Group tutorials and continuous assessment of the group assignment (10%)
- Conference organisation tasks (10%)
- Questionnaire on the course content related to caregivers (15%)
- Questionnaire on the course content related to physiotherapy in older adults (15%)
- Peer group assessment (10%)
Second assessment
For the second call, the grades obtained for all actitivites from the first assessment period that are not subject to reassessment will be retained.
Only the following activities may be reassessed, if they have not been passed:
- Questionnaire on immigrant caregivers
- Questionnaire on physiotherapy in older adults
- Group assignment and presentation. In this case, the assignment and presentation must be completed individually and on the topic specified by the course coordinator.
The remaining assessment activities cannot be reassessed, even if they have not been passed, and the grade obtained in the first assessment period will be retained.
Honours (Matrícula de Honor) will not be awarded during this assessment period.
Third and fourth assessment (and extraordinary)
The subject will be evaluated with the same system as in the examination and the first resit and marks from previous years will not have any value in the subsequent resits.
Honor Matrix Assignment Procedure (MH)
- The criterion for assigning Honorary Enrolments (MH) is based on the Excellent (9.0).
- The assignment is solely for the teacher and does not have to give it, even if the student has obtained a mark above 9.0.
- In case the teacher decides to award MH, he will not take into account the numerical mark and the highest, but will evaluate other factors. The HM might not match the highest numeric score.
Procedure for Non-presented Assignment (NP)
- To register an NP in the student's file, it must not have been submitted to any of the evaluation tests throughout the assignment.
- If a student has submitted to one of the evaluation tests, the corresponding percentages in the teaching guide will be applied, with a 0 in those not presented.
Procedure for plagiarism or academic fraud
Any assignment or activity (including exams) in which plagiarism, falsification or academic fraud is detected, will result in a failure of the activity and an academic sanction that will entail from the loss of enrolment rights in this subject, to the opening of a file process.
