AI as a multimedia content generator

On Tuesday, UIC Barcelona lecturer Joan Hernández gave a talk entitled “Generative AI: practical tools for generating multimedia content” for the university’s teaching staff. In front of a large group of lecturers from different faculties, he highlighted the most effective artificial intelligence (AI) tools for generating educational material.

“Create a presentation about the Sagrada Familia.” In response to that simple prompt, AI produces 10 slides on Antoni Gaudí’s magnum opus — in just 26 seconds! Hernández stressed the importance of using AI tools to optimise teaching work and boost creativity in classrooms. “They save us time as teachers and can give us surprising results in a matter of seconds,” he said.

Hernández presented a range of AI tools in his talk. One he focused on particularly was Gamma App, a platform that uses generative AI to design presentations. Nonetheless, he also emphasised the need to review and complete all the content produced. As a member of the audience noticed, the images of the Sagrada Familia in the slides Hernández had created by way of example were not entirely accurate. Hernández remarked that this showed exactly why, “as professionals, we have to check over all the information”. A presentation generated using AI should only be a starting point, he added.

The other AI tools Hernández talked about included Firefly, an image generator; Ideogram, a social network based on content created using AI; and, of course, ChatGPT, which, as the Faculty of Communication Sciences lecturer pointed out, is another option for generating PowerPoint presentations. A tool that made a particular impression was Sendsteps, which enables users to create interactive presentations and questionnaires with the help of AI, offering a very easy way to inject more dynamism into classes.

The session ended with a debate in which the attendees discussed the extent to which teachers can trust AI. In the words of Hernández: “These tools are designed to complement and support the work of teaching staff; they can be a source of inspiration, efficiency and learning for us.”
