Mireia Baylina wins the seventh edition of the internal “Describe your thesis in 4 minutes” competition

Her thesis, “Planning ahead for dignified care” received first prize in the contest that took place on Thursday 9 May in the Saló de Graus. Doctoral student Mireia Baylina will represent UIC Barcelona in the inter-university final of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), which will be held in Tarragona on 27 June

Six doctoral students entered the contest with the challenge of presenting their research within a time limit of four minutes. Participants had to synthesise the topic of their thesis in that time, and explain the research methodology and results obtained.

“Explain your thesis in 4 minutes” is a contest that consists of two stages. During the first, each university holds internal heats with the aim of selecting the candidate who will represent the university. In the second stage, organised by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), the overall final of Catalan universities takes place in public.

This year Mireia Baylina, PhD student of Medicine, won both first prize and the audience prize. As part of her project, Baylina created a new visual tool based on twelve illustrated vignettes which helps in making early decisions with multipathological and fragile older patients. As the winner of the contest explains, "this project puts the focus on the elderly, who are a pillar of our society and we must take great care of them".

Fernanda Salazar won second prize, with the thesis “Effectiveness of a high intensity interval training programme in children and adolescents with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans”, and Aitana Plaza won the prize for the best thesis in Catalan.

The jury was formed by Mònica Argemí, Director of Personal Development and Institutional Culture; Isaac Vázquez, Director of Information Systems at the University; and Cristina Alfonso, lecturer of the Nursing Department. The three evaluated the subject matter, the clarity of the discourse, the content and skills of the presenter.

This year’s edition was held within the framework of the first UIC Barcelona Research Fest, organised by the Vice-Rectorate for Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer. The objective of this festival was to create a meeting point where researchers and professionals could reflect, share ideas and enjoy research work. During the day several activities took place grouped into three blocks: Discovery Day, PhDay and ThankUDay.
