Introduction

The subject of Respiratory System is intended for students to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for detection, diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases.

Pre-course requirements

The student must have passed the subject: Body Structure and Function: Cardiovascular, respiratory and renal system.

 

 

Objectives

To acquire theoretical and practical knowledge sufficient to ensure a proper understanding of diseases of the respiratory system in terms of prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

  • 23 - Communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing with patients, family members, media and other professionals.

Learning outcomes of the subject

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

-          Interpret the clustering of signs and symptoms in order to guide the clinical problem and to establish a differential diagnosis in respiratory diseases.

-          Discuss the indication of the different diagnostic tests.

-          Interpret basic imaging (chest radiograph).

-          Interpret respiratory function tests: spirometry, 6-minute walking test, arterial blood gases.

-          Know indication and performance of night studies: nocturnal pulsioximetry, cardiorespiratory polygraphy.

-          Know the different forms of oxygen administration.

-          Know the different non-invasive ventilatory suport techniques.

-          Know the thoracic endoscopic techniques (bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy).

-          Know the pleural techniques for diagnosis and treatment, and to interpret pleural fluid analysis.

Teaching and learning activities

Master Classes: through lectures the teacher will transmit knowledge in a classroom to the entire group of students on the course. 

Theoretical-practical classes: through the resolution of clinical cases by students. Face-to-face classes. 

Laboratory Skills: is an area in which the student, in small groups, can develop technical skills on the basis of patient simulators with mannequins ands robots. Face-to-face classes.

 

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



ClinicalTHEORY: with a value of 80% of the overall score, consisting of two tests:

Midterm exam (20%): A 30 questions multiple-choice test with four possible answers. Failure to submit the midterm exam is equivalent to 0 in the percentage of the partial examination in the final grade. In case of justified absence, the weight of the partial examination will be absorbed by the final exam. It does not release material for the final exam.

Final exam (60%): A 40 questions multiple-choice test with four possible answers (50% of the final exam) and 5 short questions – clinical cases resolution (50% of the final exam). The exam content includes all the material worked in the different methodologies used and training activities, as well as the main recommended bibliography, and will refer to both theoretical aspects and clinical cases or situations. It is necessary to approve (≥ 5) each part separately (test and short questions) in order to pass the final exam.

*The multiple-choice test is scored with 1 point each correct question; incorrect answer will suppose a penalty worth a 1/3 of a point. The unanswered questions do not score.

 

OTHER

-  Assessment of laboratories skills (attendance + test questions), with a value of 10% of the overall score.

-  Participation, self-assessment, simulacrum through PROMIR platform, with a value of 10% of the overall grade.

 

In 2nd CALL EXAM evaluation will consist of a multiple-choice test and a written short question – clinical cases resolution with the same format and weight in the overall grade for the course (60%) than the final exam first call. Only the suspended part in 1st call will be recovered in 2nd call exam. It is necessary to approve (≥ 5) each part separately (test and short questions) in order to pass the second call examination.  

Exam reviews will be conducted face to face following a written request before a pre-established closing date.

 

FINAL COURSE GRADE will be obtained from the weighted average of the partial examination, final examination (1st or 2nd call), laboratory skills and participation-self-assessment, with one decimal.

It is necessary to pass the final exam (1st or 2nd call), with a grade ≥ 5 to pass the course and be able to make the sum of the previously described items.

If the student does not pass the course, none score will keep for the next year.
