Introduction
Pain and craniomandibular dysfunction have a very significant prevalence in the general population. The consultation of patients with dysfunctional symptoms is very frequent in the different areas of dentistry and other medical specialties, hence the need to be able to quickly diagnose signs and symptoms as dentists in order to guide our patients on what therapeutic measures to carry out. Many of these patients have disturbances during sleep. Due to the presence of snoring, or apnea and hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Being a pathology difficult to manage and with great affectation at the level of the quality of life of the patient. Currently, the concept of masticatory system dysfunction and sleep disturbances, in the area of knowledge of Dentistry, is integrated into the general context of the patient as a functional unit, which requires a comprehensive approach and treatment.
Pre-course requirements
Basic clinical knowledge and skills on anatomy of the stomatognathic system and neurophysiology of sleep.
Objectives
- Train students to acquire basic, theoretical and practical knowledge, in relation to the Diagnosis of disorders associated with are (snoring, apneas, hypopnea).
- Obtain sufficient knowledge of hairs Different types of treatments (physiotherapy, oral orthoses, oxygen masks, respiratory surgery).
- Know the relationship that is established between sleep disorders and the emotional component of the patient. Know how to handle the component of axis 2 or Psychological of the patient.
- Identify the bruxism component of sleep in patients who experience sleep disturbances.
- Encourage the search for information on the subject.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- Do Non-Surgical Treatment of Sleep Disorders
- Identify and correct oral habits likely to cause or exacerbate sleep pathology
- Assess the motor and sensory function of the mouth, in the jaws and annexes
- Know the morphology and function of the stomatognathic system, including appropriate contents of specific embryology, anatomy, histology and physiology
- Diagnose, plan and carry out, in general, a multidisciplinary, sequential and integrated Treatment of limited complexity in patients of all ages and conditions and in patients with special needs (Diabetic, hypertensive, oncological, transplanted, immunosuppressed, anticoagulated, among others) or disabled. Specifically, the dentist must be COMPETENT in the Establishment of 1 Diagnosis, 1 prognosis and the development of 1 adequate therapeutic planning, and particularly in orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, bruxism AND OTHER parafunctional habits; dental and periapical pathology; oral trauma; periodontal pathology and peri-implant tissues; bone pathology of the maxillae, to the soft tissues of the mouth and annexed glands; states of partial or total edentation and in the planning of the rehabilitation treatment by means of dental and mucosal supported prostheses, or by means of dental implants, dental malpositions and / or malocclusions and other anatomical or functional alterations of the face or stomatognathic system and possible orthodontic corrections , orthopedic or surgical
- Carry out Diagnostic models, Assemble them and take interocclusal records via Analog and digital system.
Learning outcomes of the subject
Know how to diagnose patients with sleep disorders, through physical examination and interpretation of complementary tests.
Know how to interpret complementary tests such as hospital polysomnography or respiratory polygraphy for the detection of OSAHS or snoring.
Develop and correctly fit mandibular advancement devices for the treatment of mild OSAHS
Prescribe the appropriate treatment for moderate and severe OSAHS
Instruct oral sleep hygiene measures.
Management of patients with sleep bruxism pathology and patients with snoring.

The final evaluation will be as follows:
Theoretical test:
In the evaluation all the theoretical concepts taught throughout the semester of the subject will be considered. It will consist of multiple choice exam of 40 questions.
Exceptionally, the possibility of taking an oral exam of the subject will be assessed with the teaching staff of the subject and the academic secretary if the individual situation requires it in particular.
