Introduction

Demographic projections for the coming years tell us of an aging population with more chronic medical pathologies. The social reality is causing a considerable number of people with special needs, frail elderly or with important chronic pathologies to live in residences or specific centers. These patients require dental care that goes beyond the mere usual and occasional care function, encompassing concepts of prevention and incorporating equipment and differentiated work techniques. Theoretical knowledge about systemic diseases, their influence on the dental situation. mucosal lesions and treatment techniques applied to the elderly are of paramount importance for the Clinical Residency

Degree in Dentistry or Stomatology is required

Objectives

That dentists have the theoretical bases for the management of institutionalized patients, the elderly and those with complex medical or pharmacological pathologies. That they know the different techniques that the dentist can use in the care of this profile of patients

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Train dentists who are knowledgeable about the medical and pharmacological pathologies that condition dental treatments in elderly and disabled patients. Train dentists capable of integrating into multidisciplinary care teams for the elderly. Train dentists capable of knowing the particularities of dental treatment that is resolved in a hospital environment under sedation and/or anesthesia techniques. Train dentists interested in research and the study of old age, disability and oral pathology. Train dentists capable of dentally treating patients with medical or pharmacological compromise. Train dentists capable of knowing the diagnostic management and treatment of mucosal lesions. Train dentists who are knowledgeable about the medical, social, psychological and structural characteristics of institutionalized patients and reception institutions

Part I: general aspects Epidemiological and preventive aspects of dental assistance to patients with previous pathology. Legal aspects of assistance to patients with disabilities. Prevention and management of emergency situations in the dental office. Periodontal aspects in the dental treatment of special patients. Implantology and surgical aspects in special patients. Dental therapy in special patients. Prosthodontic rehabilitation in patients with medical compromise. Orthodontic treatment in special patients. Manifestations in the oral mucosa of systemic diseases. Part II: Medically Compromised Patients Supplementary tests. Which ones to request and how to interpret them. Dental care for patients with infectious diseases. Lyrical hepatitis. Dental assistance to patients with HIV infection. Dental care for patients with immune disorders. Dental care for cancer patients. Dental assistance to patients with cardiovascular pathology. Students will attend theoretical classes online through the University platform on Monday nights at 10 p.m. The students will carry out seminars with presentation of clinical cases on Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The students will prepare some of the topics under the direction of the teacher The students will carry out a global exam of the theoretical contents of the online
