Introduction

The internships comply with the provisions of Royal Decree 1707/2011, of November 18, which regulates the external academic practices of university students, as well as with the provisions of the Internal Regulation that regulates internships in companies and institutions approved by the Executive Committee of the Governing Board of the International University of Catalonia (UIC) on 14.10.2013.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB7 - Students should be able to apply the knowledge acquired and have the ability to solve problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
  • CB8 - Students should be able to integrate their knowledge so that they can deal with the complexity involved in making judgements based on information that may be incomplete or limited, and may therefore require considerations of the social and ethical responsibilities involved in applying knowledge or judgement.
  • CE01 - To have the ability to communicate with patients suffering from a disease that requires urgent treatment, managing resources for a patient-doctor conversation that is initially focused on the most important medical aspects.
  • CE02 - Planning emergency care, assessing the psychological dimension of the suffering of patients and family members
  • CE03 - When a patient has an intense or worsening condition, students should know how to identify and assess clinical indications of a risk to their life or a serious danger to their functions, establishing priorities for their treatment.
  • CE05 - To use a patient's medical history and physical examination to identify the signs and symptoms of the most common serious conditions and serious complications to chronic conditions, correctly interpreting the information.
  • CE06 - To demonstrate their knowledge and flexible and decisive handling of protocols and guidelines for clinical practice when dealing with the most serious or common conditions in urgent and emergency care.
  • CE07 - To carry out a continuous re-evaluation of the patient in urgent and emergency care in order to readjust the provisional diagnosis and consequent change to the treatment plan when necessary.
  • CE08 - To act decisively, accurately and efficiently when applying the invasive and non-invasive treatment techniques used in emergencies.
  • CE09 - To recognise the risks associated with operation procedures and the diagnostic techniques and treatments employed in emergencies, and to carry them out as safely as possible in terms of the safety of the student, other professionals and the patient.
  • CG1 - To know how to work in a multidisciplinary team in an independent way, and how to take the initiative to resolve any disputes or problems that arise between different professional perspectives.
  • CG2 - To act fairly, making sure to offer equal opportunities and universal access to patients who require medical attention, encouraging respect for human rights and a social and sustainable coexistence.
  • CG3 - To practice effective timekeeping and to manage activities so as to ensure efficient organisation and the best possible ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
  • CG6 - To apply current healthcare legislation related to both pre-hospital and hospital care.
  • CT01 - To respect the ethical standards and laws that govern healthcare and the relationship with the patient in urgent and emergency care, as well as the ability to provide information on basic aspects of the same when required.
  • CT02 - To continuously adapt and prioritise available resources to cover the needs of every patient and to maintain the quality of their care.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Manages critical care of medical, surgical and trauma emergencies treated in a hospital, as well as in the intensive care unit and anesthesia units.
  • Knows and properly handles biosafety medical equipment and self-protection measures against risks and patient safety.
  • Is able to make the nursing diagnosis, carry out the integral care of the patient and carry out properly the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in situations of cardiological, vascular, respiratory, neurological, digestive, nephrourological, infectious, endocrine-metabolic, mental health and patient in palliative care.
  • Is able to make the nursing diagnosis, carry out the integral care of the patient and carry out properly the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in the situations of gynecological and obstetric emergencies, including the assistance to the eutocic delivery.
  • Is able to make the nursing diagnosis, carry out the integral care of the patient and carry out properly the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in pediatric emergency situations.
  • Knows and is able to properly carry out diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in analgesia, sedation and relaxation in emergencies.
  • Is able to make the nursing diagnosis, carry out the integral care of the patient and properly carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in situations of musculoskeletal traumatological emergencies.
  • Is able to make the nursing diagnosis, carry out the integral care of the patient and properly carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in situations of general surgical emergency or digestive system.
  • It is able to perform the nursing diagnosis, carry out the integral care of the patient and carry out properly the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in emergency situations due to physical and chemical agents: burns, electrocution, near-drowning, acute poisoning, drug deprivation, shock wave pathology, crush pathology, heat pathology, cold pathology.
  • It is able to perform the nursing diagnosis, carry out the integral care of the patient and carry out properly the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in the main emergency situations of other medical-surgical specialties: otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmological.
  • Knows how to perform patient care under mechanical ventilation or assisted, invasive or non-invasive ventilation.
  • Knows how to perform: peripheral venous canalization, intraosseous canalization.
  • Knows how to prepare and assist the realization of the technique of central venous canalization.
  • Knows how to perform: bladder catheterization, nasogastric and orogastric catheterization, gastric lavage.
  • Knows how to perform: anterior nasal packing.
  • Knows how to perform: Pulse oximetry, capnography, blood gases, electrocardiography.
  • Knows how to perform: extraction of samples for laboratory determinations in emergencies: blood count, coagulation study, plasma biochemistry, urine systematic, urinary sediment, determination of toxicants.

Syllabus

This subject consists of a rotating in the intensive care service with the following temporary load:

  • Emergency Unit: 4 ECTS

Teaching and learning activities

In person



The teaching methodology combines:

  • Problem-based learning
  • Hands-on learning by doing
  • Practical learning by model observation
  • The individual effort of the student

The rotations are developed following an individual program in a network of health centers specifically selected for their care and research activity and their potential for the training of professionals.

This individual program is communicated to the student at the beginning of the academic year, and changes can be made at the request of the student under certain conditions and requirements.

In each practical rotation the student is tutored by a Internship Tutor, who will be a health professional adequately qualified for clinical practice and teaching, who will be responsible for guiding the student in their practical learning.

The Internship Coordinator will carry out an individualized and continuous follow-up of the student during the development of the practices. As long as the pandemic circumstances derived from COVID advise the limitation of personal contact, the Internship Coordinator will maintain continuous contact with the centers and internship tutors, as well as with the students electronically and through online meetings via Meet; to guarantee the learning and satisfaction of the student during the practical experience, in addition to consulting doubts and / or resolving conflicts.

Daily attendance at internships is mandatory. If for justified reasons it is not possible to attend the internship one day, the student must notify the Internship Coordinator, who will evaluate if the absence is justified and if it is such a case if it is appropriate and it is possible to reschedule it.

Similarly, if for reasons derived from the Covid-19 pandemic it is necessary to suspend or interrupt any rotation, the Internship Coordinator will reschedule said rotation to the affected students when it is possible.

Evaluation systems and criteria

En términos generales, las prácticas se evaluarán teniendo en cuenta la actividad individual del alumno, la evaluación en el puesto de trabajo por parte de los tutores/profesionales, así como la elaboración por parte del alumno de la Memoria de Prácticas.

Durante las prácticas el estudiante deberá elaborar la Memoria de Prácticas que entregará el día que termine las mismas. La entrega será telemática por medio del aula virtual.

El alumno deberá elaborar y entregar una Memoria de Prácticas, que deberá contener la siguiente información relativa a los distintos tipos de servicio por los que ha rotado (servicios de urgencias hospitalarias, unidad de cuidados intensivos y anestesia):

  • Descripción de las tareas desarrolladas en cada servicio a lo largo del tiempo de la rotación.
  • Evaluación de las tareas realizadas con el conocimiento y las habilidades adquiridas.
  • Relación de los problemas planteados y los procedimientos seguidos para resolverlos.
  • Identificación de las aportaciones que en términos de aprendizaje han supuesto las prácticas.
  • Evaluación de las prácticas y propuestas de mejora.

Por otra parte, cada tutor de prácticas del alumno realizará la evaluación de los alumnos por él tutorizados atendiendo a unos criterios evaluativos adaptados a cada rotación específica, alineados con los objetivos y los criterios de aprendizaje establecidos en la memoria académica.

La nota final estará determinada por:

  • 60%: Nota media de todas las evaluaciones realizadas por los Tutores de Prácticas en cada una de las rotaciones. 
  • 30%: Nota media de la Memoria de Prácticas.
  • 10%: Asistencia y esfuerzo individual.
