Introduction
The Construction 3 course is intended to study building enclosures and the materials, products and systems they comprise.
Once the basic concepts of construction requirements have been taught and students have been introduced to the essential vocabulary, both of which were touched on in the first course, the aim is to make a thorough analysis of the concepts of stability and durability.
The second course is planned under a common term over the two semesters, each tackling stability and evolution in terms of two different aspects: the structure and the hydrothermal behaviour of buildings, their systems and the materials that make them up.
This second term concentrates on the typological parameters that characterize the behaviour of buildings with regard to hydrothermal stability. We start out with the concept of comfort before moving on to an analysis of environmental considerations, the formulation of requirements and a study of possible solutions: systems and typology.
Pre-course requirements
It is recommended that students have already passed the subjects of Introduction to Construction, Construction 1 and Construction 2.
Objectives
The subject concentrates students’ focus on the consideration of aspects relating to stability and durability from the building’s behavioural response through to comfort factors. Course 1 begins with an introduction to building typologies in terms of their hydrothermal and acoustic behaviour before moving on to introduce demands and requirements.
The aim is to analyse the behaviour of elements, materials and unions in order to understand what a building must comprise from the perspective of relationships with environmental conditions, a protection system and controlled energy exchanges.

Syllabus
- Introduction: The concept of comfort. An analysis of places, requirements, solutions and typologies.
- Materials: energy and thermal behaviour
- The living building: construction joints and unions
- Enclosures and openings. Homogeneous and heterogeneous solutions
- Movements. Temperature and humidity. Diagnosis and causes of pathologies
Teaching and learning activities
In person
The course will comprise four theory blocks corresponding to each of the sections of the syllabus. The introductory section starts with a theory class followed by a short practical session to give students more direct, hands-on knowledge.
Each theory session will start with an announcement of the corresponding practical task and end with a full session devoted to undertaking this task in the relevant classrooms.
At all times, the explanations of theoretical aspects will be supported by analyses of examples of exemplary buildings. The aim is to demonstrate the actual physical reality of the theoretical concepts being taught while at the same time familiarizing students with the history of architecture. It is hoped that the proposed practical exercises will allow the students’ capacity for analysis to be evaluated as well as monitoring their progress in assimilating the subject matter.

Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
The final evaluation will be made on class attendance, the grades of each of the practical assignments undertaken and an examination on the theory taught to students. Students’ capacity to assimilate concepts and evidence of a positive logical evolution will also be assessed.
