Introduction

Pathophysiology of disorders in the Nervous System is the set of basic scientific and practical knowledge necessary to recognize the developmental mechanisms of disease processes and allows students to acquire the methods and techniques of diagnosing the diseases in this system.

This course implies that students acquire theoretical knowledge, skills and the attitudes necessary for learning the neurological pathology throughout the rest of curricular academic degree in Physiotherapy.

Pre-course requirements

The student must have basic knowledge of the structure and function of the human body in order to understand the different pathological situations that occur in the body. 

Objectives

The overall objective of this subject is to get to know the patients as well as the diseases and therefore, the students gain knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms of disease through a comprehensive and systematic viewpoint from the patient and neurological disease.

The specific objectives are:

  • To acquire an integrated overall view of the mechanisms that alter the normal functions of the various structures and connections that make up the nervous system.
  • Understand the importance of the clinical history.
  • Identify and interpret the main clinical manifestations indicative of disease.
  • Differentiates between the signs of normal and abnormal organ function.
  • Know the principles of the additional tests used in order to study and differentiate normal and pathological functions as well as their precise indications in Neurology.

  • 40 - Knowledge about, physiological, functional and behavioral changes that occur after physiotherapeutic intervention.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Be able to argue the importance of the case history and examination before the assigned cases.
  • Be able to argue and write the justification of additional diagnostic tests.
  • Interpret and recognize the pathophysiological mechanisms of clinical manifestations in common pathological processes affecting the central nervous system and neuromuscular system 
  • Be able to group symptoms and signs which appear in patients with the intention of recognizing common syndromes that affect the central nervous system and neuromuscular system.

UNIT 5: Spinal Trauma. Spinal shock: Neurological examination of the spinal cord and spinal pathology.
UNIT 6: Meningeal syndrome

UNIT 8: Intracranial hypertension                                                
UNIT 9: Tumors that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems (CNS and PNS: SNC and SNP in Spanish)

UNIT 10: Cerebrovascular pathology. Stroke

Teaching and learning activities

Lectures: oral presentation/ master lecture. 

Questions resolution and concepts review: two in-person classes, one by half of the course syllabus. 

 

Self-learning activities: clinical cases resolution. Online delivery.

Continuous evaluation, through questions during the in-person classes.

"Question forum" will be available online (Moodle platform), to resolve questions. Professor-student and student-student interactions.

Evaluation systems and criteria

The instruments that will be used to assess the acquisition of skills are as follows:

Midterm Exam (20%): Written multiple-choice test. 30 questions with 5 possible answers each one. Wrongly answered bubtract is 0.25 points.

Final exam (70%): Written multiple-choice test; it is essential to pass this exam with a mark equal to or greater than a 5 so that the midterm exam and the final exam average to make a passing mark.

Continuous evaluation (10%): class attendance, self-learning activities in class or at home, participation.

The 1st resit will include a written multiple-choice test where it is essential to pass with a mark equal to or greater than 5.

In all tests and exams, 0.25 points will be deducted for each incorrect answer.
