Foros 2022 | Evolving technologies

Andrea Deplazes + Jordi Faulí i Oller

On 9 March, the next lecture in the Foros series 2022, organised by UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, will take place under the title “Evolving technologies”. The session will be hosted by architects Andrea Deplazes and Jordi Faulí i Oller, who will analyse the evolution of building systems induced by new digital technologies and their relationship with the current socio-economic framework and environmental requirements. The session will be moderated by the director of the series of lecture, lecturer Juan Trias de Bes.

Andrea Deplazes is an architect from the prestigious polytechnic institute ETH Zurich (Switzerland), where he has also lectured in Architecture and Construction since the late 1990s. He was also director of the Architecture department of ETH Zurich between 2005 and 2007.  Professionally, he runs the studio Bearth + Deplazes together with Valentin Bearth, with offices in the Swiss cities Chur and Zurich.  Deplazes is also a recognised author of architecture manuals, among which the book Construir la arquitectura. Del material en bruto al edificio (Building architecture. From raw materials to the building) has been particularly successful. The volume, published in Spain by Gustavo Gili, has become a reference construction treatise among architecture teachers and students. Starting from the premise that designing and building form an inseparable unity, he approaches the different branches of constructive knowledge from both a technical and a compositional and conceptual perspective.

Jordi Faulí i Oller holds a PhD in Architecture from the ETSAB in Barcelona and, since 2012, he has been the leading architect and coordinator of the building work on the Sagrada Familia. He is a full member of the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi and a full member of the Institute for Catalan Studies, affiliated with the Science and Technology Section. In 2010 he was awarded the Barcelona City Prize in the Architecture and Urban Planning category, for the execution of the Sagrada Familia naves together with the other members of the project management team of Gaudí's great temple.

Foros is an annual lecture series on architecture and urban planning, which this year is held under the title “The leap into the void”. This new series calls for self-awareness regarding architecture today in its different aspects and fields of application. As a new feature, the lecture series is introducing a new format based on a two-way dialogue between professionals from the sector who will partake in sessions structured by themes linked to current architectural practice and the challenges facing the sector.
