In addition to class hours, students will be attended to on demand through the teachers' institutional e-mails and, if a face-to-face meeting is considered necessary, by appointment.

Introduction

This is the first subject dealing with composition that students encounter on their architecture course. At ESARQ we want our students to have a good knowledge of the History of Architecture but also the History of Painting and Sculpture. An architect must know if a cathedral is Gothic or from the Renaissance but also must be aware of the most important works of Bernini or the main characteristics of Neoclassical painting, to give just two examples.

English, because the subject is taught exclusively in this language

Objectives

We want our students:

-to recognize the characteristics of the most important artists and works of every style and period.

-to acquire the appropriate tools to analyze a work of art (architecture, painting or sculpture).

-to study the most relevant works and museums of Barcelona covering every period.

Adequate knowledge of:

54 Aesthetics and the theory and history of Fine Arts and Applied Arts

Learning outcomes of the subject

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

-recognize the more relevant styles of architecture, sculpture and painting studied during the course

-distinguish their most important characteristics

-describe and explain a building, a sculpture and a painting correctly using appropriate terminology

-identify the most important artists of the movements studied

-distinguish the master works of each movement, knowing the artist who created it and the century

23/11. MIDTERM EXAM. Class: Italian Renaissance: Quattrocento

30/11. Italian Renaissance: Quattrocento/ Cinquecento.

14/12. Cinquecento. Baroque.

21/12. Baroque. Neoclassicism. XIX Century historicism and eclecticism. Barcelona’s Pla Cerdà.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



The classes will be theoretical and practical. The theoretical part will always be with the help of images and visual content. The practical part will be in form of appropriate reading, from ancient or contemporary sources, visits to museums or walks around the city.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



There will be 2 exams and also the student’s attendance record, level of participation and performance in practical exercises will count towards the final grade.
