Institute for Culture and Thought

Universitat Internacional de Catalunya

The Institute for Culture and Thought (CIP) is the academic centre at UIC Barcelona that promotes education, research and cross-cutting humanistic reflection at the University. The CIP contributes to the education of engaged citizens with deep thinking and a holistic understanding of reality.

The CIP connects different areas of knowledge to address both the great existential questions and the challenges of today’s society. Its mission is to promote a person-centred education inspired by Christian humanism and to highlight values such as truth, freedom and service. The CIP’s intellectual mission is to offer a broad perspective on reality, offering insight that provides a profound understanding of history, culture, society, science, etc.

Through cross-cutting subjects, the CIP fosters critical thinking and open dialogue, enabling students to integrate knowledge and contribute to a more humane and supportive society.

“Many graduates often comment that the challenges that have concerned them most in their professional lives are not technical but of a human and ethical nature, and they feel that university did not properly equip them to handle these issues. By incorporating humanistic subjects into the various degree programmes at UIC Barcelona, the objective is to help students think seriously and critically about the matters that affect them most as individuals, issues which cannot be resolved by simply applying a method, but through reflection and shared knowledge – something that university should do.”

"University life is not just about acquiring knowledge in a specific field. It’s about growing as a person, questioning the reasons why and developing critical thinking. In this regard, the subjects taught by the CIP are key training for achieving these goals. In a time when characteristic human traits are becoming increasingly hazy, it is more important than ever to study Anthropology and Ethics to discover who we are.”

"In my personal experience, taking Ethics within the CIP programme has given purpose to my Humanities studies. Having learned the values and theory from the subject, I can apply a philosophy of which I had no prior knowledge. Ethics has inspired many of my texts and sparked my quest for the transcendent and moral meaning I have pursued since then. For me, it is the foundation of all correctly developed thought and the goal to which everyone should aspire: the quest for excellence for the benefit of not only the individual but today’s society. I believe this learning is essential for everyone and an area of study that is vital for the professional and career development of future generations. Attending these classes has no doubt had a profound philosophical and emotional impact on me, one that will guide my academic journey with greater depth and clarity."
