UIC Barcelona, as an entity dedicated to research and the transmission of knowledge, works to find, disseminate and apply ethical alternatives to the socio-economic and environmental challenges facing today's society.

In line with the mission and vision of UIC Barcelona, the university has produced a Framework Document for Sustainability.

Over the years, the different rectors at UIC Barcelona have signed commitments to sustainability with the Barcelona City Council’s Agenda 21 Programme (Agenda 21 Commitment) and the Commitment of Universities for Sustainability, in light of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, RIO +20 (Río +20 Commitment).

In September 2016, in the context of the first anniversary of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the current rector of UIC Barcelona, Dr Xavier Gil Mur, signed a commitment to sustainability policies on behalf of UIC Barcelona: UIC Barcelona commitment to sustainability policies.
