Introduction

Occlusion

Occlusion is a broad subject, closely interconnected with other disciplines of odontology. Its main purpose is to provide sufficient knowledge to preserve the masticatory system. This is only achievable through a proper understanding of its various components and their function.

Complete removable prosthesis

Rehabilitation of edentulous patients can be accomplished by producing a complete tissue-borne prosthesis when the first-line treatment (total implant-prosthesis) cannot be done for various reasons.

Removable partial prosthesis

For partially edentulous patients who cannot have a fixed prosthesis, a removable partial denture is an alternative that can restore lost function and aesthetics.

Objectives

Occlusion

  • Review the activities related to the diagnosis and treatment decisions in occlusion.

Complete removable prosthesis

  • To acquire the basic knowledge and skills for the preparation of a complete removable prosthesis.

Removable partial prosthesis

  • To acquire the basic knowledge and skills for the preparation of a complete removable prosthesis.
 

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB10 - Students should acquire the learning skills that allow them to continue to study.
  • CB6 - Students should have and understand knowledge that provides the basis for or opportunity to be original in terms of the development and application of ideas, often within a research context.
  • CB7 - Students should know how to apply the knowledge they have acquired and be able to resolve problems in new or little known environments within a broader (or multidiciplinary) context, related to their area of study.
  • CE4 - To acquire the ability to make oral preparations on mucosa, teeth, and dental implants, to build dental prostheses in patients with advanced oral and multidisciplinary disorders; as well as identify and undertake the procedures and various checks for the prosthetic components during construction.
  • CE5 - To be able to give public presentations on your own clinical cases based on the scientific literature, and correctly use the scientific terminology related to temporomandibular dysfunction and aesthetic restorative dentistry.
  • CE7 - To be able to search for, organise and analyse, from a critical point of view, and using biomedical sources of information, scientific literature on issues related to temporomandibular dysfunction and aesthetic restorative dentistry, in order to pursue continuing education in a self-directed and autonomous way.
  • CG4 - To know how to apply protocols for the use of the equipment in the dental laboratory-workshop to the point of undertaking the necessary procedures that help in oral rehabilitation or the treatments common to a restorative dentist.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Be able to evaluate the toothless patient
  • Be able to define the concept of Biological Parameter
  • Be able to define the D.V.O., D.V.R.
  • Be able to define and search for clinical references of the Incisal Line
  • Be able to define and find clinical references in a toothless mouth for the Occlusal Plane
  • Know how to define the Prosthetic Neutral Space
  • Be able to describe the anatomy and features of the toothless alveolar ridge
  • Know how to define the parameters of natural teeth: color, shape, size, cusp angle, material
  • Be able to describe the parameters needed for occlusion
  • Be able to define the biological parameters that relate the artificial teeth to each other (occlusal relationship, incisal guide, compensation curves and posterior length of the arch)
  • Know the concept of Removable Prosthesis.
  • Know the nomenclature of the elements that make up a PPR
  • Know how to develop a diagnosis and a coordinated treatment plan in PPR.
  • Describe the types of direct retainers according to the material and design
