Introduction

This subject provides a comprehensive overview of the core clinical concepts in endodontics that are essential for daily clinical practice. It serves as a bridge between foundational biological principles and the application of clinical protocols, emphasizing a structured and evidence-based approach to endodontic diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. The course focuses on developing clinical reasoning, understanding biological responses to treatment, and integrating contemporary concepts into predictable clinical outcomes.

Pre-course requirements

Students must have successfully completed the foundational theoretical modules of the master’s program. A basic understanding of pulp biology, periapical pathology, dental anatomy, and diagnostic principles is required in order to fully benefit from the clinical concepts presented in this course.

Objectives

The main objective of this subject is to provide students with a solid understanding of the fundamental clinical concepts that guide endodontic practice. Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: • Understand the biological principles that govern pulp and periapical healing. • Apply standardized clinical protocols in endodontic diagnosis and treatment. • Interpret clinical signs and symptoms in relation to pulpal and periapical pathology. • Integrate scientific evidence into everyday clinical decision-making. • Recognize factors that influence prognosis in endodontic treatment. • Develop a systematic approach to clinical problem-solving in endodontics.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

CN01 – Identify with precision the most advanced technical processes related to endodontics. • CN04 – Recognize the origin and development of oral pathologies based on biomedical sciences. • HB03 – Manage the complexity of each endodontic case. • HB04 – Classify endodontic cases according to their level of difficulty. • HB05 – Apply multidisciplinary knowledge in the resolution of endodontic problems. • HB12 – Plan appropriate clinical protocols in cases of endodontic success or failure.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Upon successful completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. Correlate clinical symptoms with pulpal and periapical diagnoses. 2. Apply evidence-based clinical concepts to routine endodontic cases. 3. Establish prognosis based on biological and clinical parameters. 4. Identify common clinical challenges and propose appropriate management strategies. 5. Communicate clinical reasoning effectively using correct scientific terminology.

Syllabus

• Biological basis of pulp and periapical disease • Clinical interpretation of pulpal and periapical pathology • Diagnosis and classification of endodontic disease • Principles of asepsis and infection control in endodontics • Clinical factors influencing treatment outcomes • Prognosis and healing in endodontics • Follow-up and evaluation of endodontic treatments

Bibliography and resources

Students are required to consult classic and contemporary scientific literature in endodontics. Core textbooks and recent peer-reviewed articles will be provided through the online platform. Independent literature review is encouraged to strengthen evidence-based clinical understanding and to remain updated with current concepts in endodontic practice.
