Introduction

This subject introduces students to the fundamental clinical techniques used in endodontic treatment through an online learning environment. The course is focused on understanding, analyzing, and correctly sequencing endodontic procedures based on biological principles and scientific evidence. Although clinical procedures are not physically performed in this subject, students will acquire a deep understanding of each clinical step, its objectives, indications, limitations, and potential complications. The course emphasizes technical reasoning, protocol standardization, and clinical predictability.

Pre-course requirements

Students must have completed the foundational theoretical subjects of the master’s program related to endodontic anatomy, pathology, diagnosis, and basic clinical concepts. This background knowledge is essential to understand the rationale behind endodontic clinical techniques and protocols.

Objectives

The main objective of this subject is to provide students with a solid understanding of basic endodontic clinical techniques and their correct application within a structured clinical protocol. By the end of the course, the student will be able to: • Understand the biological and mechanical principles underlying endodontic techniques. • Describe and sequence the different steps of endodontic clinical procedures. • Identify indications and contraindications for specific endodontic techniques. • Analyze common procedural errors and propose preventive strategies. • Select appropriate instruments and materials for each clinical step. • Apply evidence-based criteria to evaluate different technical approaches. • Communicate technical procedures clearly using appropriate scientific terminology.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

CN01 – Identify with precision the most advanced technical processes related to endodontics. • CN03 – Carry out a critical analysis to rigorously assimilate different scientific methodologies. • CN04 – Recognize the origin and development of oral pathologies based on the transversal interrelation of biomedical sciences. • HB02 – Apply scientific evidence to technical decision-making in endodontics. • HB03 – Manage the technical complexity of endodontic procedures. • HB04 – Classify endodontic procedures according to their technical difficulty. • HB07 – Prevent and manage common technical complications in endodontics. • HB08 – Apply conventional and advanced endodontic techniques with technical rigor. • HB16 – Integrate radiological analysis in the execution and evaluation of endodontic techniques

Learning outcomes of the subject

Upon successful completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. Describe and sequence basic endodontic clinical techniques accurately. 2. Identify the objectives and critical points of each technical procedure. 3. Select appropriate instruments and materials for different clinical situations. 4. Recognize common technical errors and propose corrective strategies. 5. Analyze endodontic techniques based on scientific evidence. 6. Communicate technical protocols clearly in written and oral formats.

Syllabus

This subject focuses on the analysis and understanding of basic endodontic clinical techniques through a structured and protocol-based approach. The syllabus includes: • Access cavity design and objectives • Isolation techniques and field control • Working length determination • Glide path preparation • Root canal shaping techniques • Irrigation protocols and activation methods • Intracanal medication • Obturation techniques and materials • Management of basic procedural complications

Bibliography and resources

The bibliography for this subject will be based on core endodontic textbooks, clinical guidelines, and updated scientific articles related to endodontic techniques. Additional resources include: • Recorded clinical demonstrations and technique videos. • Access to scientific databases and journals. • Technical protocol documents provided through the virtual learning platform. These resources support the acquisition of a solid technical foundation in endodontics
