Introduction
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the area of Dentistry that deals with the supervision, guidance and correction of the growth and maturation of craniofacial structures.
The main responsibilities of orthodontic practice include the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of occlusion anomalies and associated alterations of bones and soft tissues.
The Orthodontist must supervise the guidance of the dentition and the relationship between its support structures to achieve and maintain harmonious relationships between the face and cranial structures that provide the patient with optimal dentofacial physiology and aesthetics.
The subject General Orthodontic Topics introduces the student to orthodontic treatment itself and includes diagnostic aspects, preparation of the treatment plan and the effects of the treatment and its analysis through cephalometric superpositions.
Pre-course requirements
Objectives
The educational objectives for this subject of General Orthodontic Topics include a set of teaching activities that encompass all the factors involved in a malocclusion and prepare the student to be able to diagnose and plan the treatment of the clinical case.
Among the different aspects of the research methodology, this subject will introduce the criteria for searching and criticizing orthodontic literature.
The objectives of the laboratory practices are the practical application of theoretical knowledge and the reasoning necessary for the study of lateral cranial teleradiography and the different cephalometric analyses.

Lectures: They teach basic knowledge. They include the necessary bibliographical references for the study and expansion of the topic discussed.
Seminars: They are a review of the theoretical syllabus, with a much more practical aspect, which allows for a more agile student-teacher interaction.
Tutorials: Monitoring and individualized help for the student's progress.
Student work: Search and research work carried out by the student under the supervision of the teaching staff and independently.
Laboratory practices: Practical application of theoretical knowledge. They help to acquire the aptitude and skills necessary for clinical application.
CUO: External practices carried out at the University Clinic of Dentistry.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Physical presence is required for both theoretical and practical sessions.
The student must dedicate additional hours to the study and preparation of the subject.
The theoretical and practical contents of the program will be evaluated continuously and with written and oral evaluation tests.
The Evaluation will take into consideration the following points:
- Theoretical knowledge, exams are held.
- The presentation of the requested works
- The clinical practice of the student
- The order and cleanliness of the workplace
- Attitude and behavior
