Introduction
This course focuses study on the last stage of non-surgical treatment, root canal obturation. Root canal treatment promotes pulpoperiapical healing. Sealing the root canal system will maintain and prolong the clinical and radiographic success of the treatment and prevent recurrence of periapical pathologies. Obturation, therefore, has a fundamental value for medium and long term success of root canal treatment.
With this subject, students will acquire theoretical knowledge through an understanding of current scientific literature in the area of the root canal obturation and preclinical practice to achieve the ability to perform a full three-dimensional hermetic sealing of the root canals.
Pre-course requirements
No previous requirements.
Objectives
1.To know the requirements and objectives for a three-dimensional root canal filling.
2.To recognise the clinical criteria that determine when and when not to seal.
3.To know the most frequently used sealing materials in core obturation and be able to list their components and general properties.
4.To know the properties and functions of the ideal sealers.
5.To know and describe the technique of cold-lateral condensation: its advantages, disadvantages, indications, contraindications and clinical limitations.
6.To know and describe the thermoplastic techniques: types, advantages, disadvantages, indications, contraindications and clinical limitations.
7. To know and describe obturation techniques based on adhesive systems.
8.To know and describe the formation technique for the apical barrier with different materials, composition, characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and biological properties.
9.To know which obturation technique is suitable for different types of root canal morphology.
10.To analyse the clinical and radiographic criteria for assessing the quality of obturation.
