Introduction

It encompasses all the clinical activities carried out at the University Dental Clinic and in the different hospitals and institutions with which agreements are in place. These activities are conducted under the supervision of a professor and are aimed at acquiring the specific skills and competencies required for the master’s program.

Pediatric patient care at the University Dental Clinic (CUO) is provided once the case has been assessed in the corresponding clinical session. The patient is treated taking into account their specific characteristics at all levels: behavior, family context, type of dentition, and prognosis.

Pre-course requirements

The successful completion of the laboratory-based practicals and the subject Clinical I.

Objectives

To enhance students’ clinical practice in performing an accurate patient anamnesis and clinical examination, using complementary tests and being able to discern the most relevant information from that which is not.

To apply knowledge in order to carry out an appropriate diagnosis and to plan both a proper treatment and preventive plan, in primary, mixed, and permanent dentition; applying the different behavioral management techniques for pediatric patients.

To acquire the necessary skills for the management of dental emergencies, as well as for the prescription of appropriate medications when required.

To gain deeper knowledge of treatments in Neuro-Occlusal Rehabilitation, Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization, Infant Oral Care, pulp treatment in young permanent dentition, as well as treatments performed under different methods of sedation and/or general anesthesia.

In clinical cases that present greater complexity and require the involvement of other specialties, the work may be carried out jointly with students from other master’s programs, provided that the responsible professors so determine.

In those cases where, in the judgment of the faculty, the clinical complexity of the patient (age, degree of cooperation, required treatment, etc.) so advises, the performance of the treatment may be assigned to another student.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The final grade for the subject will be based on the following criteria:

  • 80%: Continuous assessment of practical training (60% University Dental Clinic, 10% Hospital HM Nens de Barcelona, 10% Hospital Sant Joan de Déu of Barcelona).

  • 20%: Clinical case portfolio.

In this subject, several criteria will be assessed, including: the student’s attitude, manual skills and behavioral management, punctuality, active participation in sessions, teamwork ability, accuracy in fulfilling assigned tasks, responsibility and commitment to learning, proper use of the uniform, as well as analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Attendance is mandatory:

  • A maximum of two justified absences per semester will be allowed, provided that the corresponding proof is submitted to the responsible professor within one week of the absence (email).
  • Only absences due to serious illness, accident, and/or the death of a first- or second-degree relative will be considered justified.
  • In the case of unjustified absences, the practical sessions must be made up during the extraordinary exam period.

The practical session will be graded with a zero in the following cases:

  • If the student does not attend the session without justification or arrives more than 15 minutes late.
  • If the student’s attitude or the quality of their work is very poor.
  • If the student shows disrespect towards professors, classmates, or support staff.
