Introduction

The course presents the study of man as a person with the aim of inviting students to reflect on their own condition and existential meaning, guided by the great authors in the history of thought. In this way, it is hoped that students will be able to understand the meaning of personal dignity and begin a path of integration into their own lives and their own science.  

Pre-course requirements

There are not pre-cours requirements. 

Objectives

The main objective of the course is to synthesize the constituent elements of the human person: their personhood, dignity, and fundamental faculties. In addition, it is intended that, by delving into the mystery of the human being, students will be motivated to freely apply this knowledge in their personal lives.

Learning outcomes of the subject

1. Acquire knowledge on the essential characteristics of the person.

2. Know and understand what the great existential questions of the individual are.

3. Acquire knowledge on how one should behave and why.

4. Learne to make decisions for situations where there are ethical implications.

5. Be more sensitive to the fostering of respect, trust and friendliness among people.

6. Learne to evaluate the ethical consequences of our actions.  

7. Acquire skills for oral and written communication.  

8. Develope the ability to analyse and synthesise the information obtained in class and from the complementary material provided by the professor.

9. Improve reading comprehension skills.

10. Develop neatness habits in written documents and presentations.

1. Introduction to anthropology

2. Nature, method, and epistemological problems in anthropology

3. Who is the human person?

4. The Greco-Roman origin of the term “person” and its Christian development

5. Dignity and human rights.

6. Personal and narrative identity. Towards the configuration of one's own history.

7. Vocation, meaning, and profession. Fulfilling oneself as a person.

8. The problem of knowledge

9. Phenomenological analysis of freedom.

Continuous assessment (45%)

  • 1 group assignment assessed in class (15%)
  • 1 handwritten reading assignment on George Orwell's 1984 (15%)
  • Attendance and participation (no more than 3 absences) (15%)


Final assessment (55%)

  • Oral exam (to be held during the last week of class at a time proposed by the teacher for each student).
