Josep Clotet's Profile

I graduated with a degree in biology in 1989 and earned my PhD in molecular biology in 1994 under the supervision of Joaquin Ariño from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. I held a postdoctoral position (2000-2009) in Dr Francesc Posas’ lab at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.

My research background is on the cell cycle and signalling in the yeast S. cerevisiae.

My current interests are:

  1. The study of the regulation of the cell cycle in yeast and mammals by new CDK/cyclin complexes.
  2. Spending time with my daughter.
  3. Participating in mountain races.
  4. Playing funky music on my SML saxophone

Mariana Ribeiro, PhD
Mariana Ribeiro, doctora

I completed my PhD at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), where I researched the pharmacological and toxicological actions of new combined cancer therapies.

In September 2014, I joined the New Cyclins Group at UIC Barcelona and I now focus on studying the role of polyphosphate in mammalian cells.

In my free time, I go to the gym and I travel around beautiful Catalonia.

Postdoctorats

Eva Quandt
Eva Quandt, PhD

I got my degree in biology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and joined the group in 2013 as a PhD student. My work in the laboratory is mainly focused on the identification and molecular characterisation of CDK/new cyclin complexes in mammalian cells.

When I’m not at work, you will probably find me reading a book or watching some TV series with my cat sat on my lap.

Eva Quandt's Profile

Laura Gasa
Laura Gasa

I joined the New Cyclins Group in 2014 after my master’s degree in biomedicine and my bachelor's degree in biochemistry at the University of Barcelona (UB). My research is into the role of new cyclins in cancer.

In my free time, I like having fun with my family and friends. Moreover, I love travelling, so I try to visit new places as much as I can.

PhD Students

Alexis Pérez
Alexis Pérez

I completed my degree in biochemistry in 2016 at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In 2017 , I went on to study a master's degree in advanced immunology from the University of Barcelona.

In 2018, I started my PhD project under the direction of Dr Josep Clotet (UIC) and Dr Martí Aldea (IBMB-CSIC) focusing on the ploidy-dependent molecular mechanisms that regulate the cell cycle.

I spend my free time travelling, watching series and playing my guitar.

Nuria Masip
Nuria Masip

I obtained my degree in Biology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and my Master in Pharmacology at the same university. At present, I am doing my PhD at the New Cyclins group in which I am focused on the molecular characterization of CDKs-NewCyclin complexes.

In my free time I like traveling or cooking, although I always spent some time playing with my cat.

Reyes Carballar
Reyes Carballar

A biochemistry graduate from the University of Seville, I moved to Barcelona to pursue a master’s degree in biomedicine at the University of Barcelona.

I joined the group in October 2016 and I’m currently doing my PhD in molecular biology which aims to characterise new regulatory mechanisms of CDK Pho85 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

In my spare time, you will find me exercising or going for a stroll. I’m an outdoor person who enjoys every bit of sunshine.

Group Manager

Natalia Ricco, PhD
Natalia Ricco, doctora

After attaining my PhD from UIC Barcelona, I spent a couple of years as a postdoc at the University of Chicago performing translational cancer research and working on an entrepreneurial project with the Chicago Booth School of Business & Polsky Institute programme. I have since moved into management and my current duties involve managing this research group, teaching and supervising medical, dentistry and physiotherapy students, as well as academic management at the Health Sciences Campus in Sant Cugat.

In my free time, I like to spend time with my family and enjoy my hobbies such as travelling, hiking or reading. I also like to practise sports and photography.

Technician

Marta Pérez
Marta Pérez

I did my degree in biology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and then I studied to become a laboratory technician at the Institut Bonanova.

In September 2012, I started working in the Basic Sciences laboratory at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. My role here covers laboratory management and supporting researchers.

In my free time, I love travelling and I am a big fan of a number of series!

Former Researchers

Elisabet Bállega
Elisabet Bállega

When I began working at UIC Barcelona, I started studying cell-cycle regulation by nutrients and I gradually  began to get into the fascinating world of systems biology and then some other projects began to emerge. I am currently studying cell-cycle regulation by external factors from a systems biology standpoint and the mechanisms related to cancer and senescence.

When I am not in the lab, you will probably find me diving in the sea around the Costa Brava.

Sergio García
Sergio García

Sergio undertook a placement with us for his master’s dissertation. He was here for half a year working on a project on cell-cycle regulation by nutrients.

Sara Hernández-Ortega, doctora
Sara Hernández-Ortega, PhD

I studied biotechnology and I did my PhD in molecular biology. My studies have shown that cyclins are nutrient-dependent, regulated by E3 ligases and become important for cell-cycle progression in yeast in low-nutrient conditions. I’m currently focusing on finding out how these accessory cyclins are also regulated in mammals.

When I’m not in the lab, you’ll maybe find me out with my dog hiking around or playing a timba drum with my batucada group.

Joan Marc Martínez-Láinez
Joan Marc Martínez-Láinez

I completed my biology studies at the Faculty of Bioscience of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. I am now working towards getting my PhD in health sciences in Dr Josep Clotet’s group.

In December 2013, I started my project which involves the discovery of new substrates regulated by an accessory cyclin-dependent kinase, Pho85, in yeast. I am now focusing on studying the role of the cell cycle in the mechanisms regulating the cell size by ploidy in collaboration with Dr Martí Aldea (CSIC-IBMB).

My main hobby is dancing the sardana as a professional dancer and I take part in competitions visiting different cities and towns around Catalonia. I also go hiking in some of the most beautiful places around the world.

Sandra Menoyo, doctora
Sandra Menoyo, PhD

Sandra was one of the founders of the group. She got her PhD degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from UIC Barcelona in 2012. The main aim of her project was to better understand how nutrients regulate the cell cycle using yeast as a model organism.

Toward the end of her thesis research, she obtained very interesting results demonstrating how the yeast CDK Pho85 (stored in mammals as CDK5) regulates yeast Cyclin D levels through phosphorylation in response to nutrient availability. This induces a quiescent state in cells in order to sustain senescence in starvation conditions.

The high-impact journal Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) published these results (Menoyo et al., 2013). She was honoured with the “Outstanding PhD award”, prize awarded for the most outstanding doctoral thesis at the university that year.

She is currently pursuing a research career in the field of cancer and ageing as a postdoctoral scientist in the field of ribosome biogenesis and cancer, under the direction of George Thomas at the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona.

Oriol Mirallas
Oriol Mirallas

Oriol got his biochemistry degree from the University of Tennessee and then started working in the lab while he was studying medicine here, at UIC Barcelona.

He’s currently studying and working in the lab in his holidays to help advance his own research on nuclear transporters.

Abril Sánchez, doctora
Abril Sánchez

I finished my degree in biotechnology at the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville and my master’s degree in medical research at the University of Seville. I am currently doing my PhD in a project focused on the role of new cyclins in stem cells and their interactions with other molecules.

In my free time, I love travelling and cooking is my secret passion!
