Foros 2022 | ‘The future of tradition’

Marc Aureli Santos + Izaskun Chinchilla

On 6 April, the next lecture in the Foros series organised by UIC Barcelona School of Architecture will be held under the title “The future of tradition”. In this upcoming lecture, Marc Aureli Santos and Izaskun Chinchilla will address a trend that is gaining ground on the architectural scene: the intervention on urban pre-existences and their constructions, given how it contributes to the reduction of construction and energy resources and the capacity to incorporate identity and tectonic values inherent to the pre-existence itself into architectural design. The talk will be moderated by lecturers Teresa Batlle and Cinta Lluis Teruel.

Marc Aureli Santos is the director of the Urban Architecture and Heritage Service at Barcelona City Council. He studied Architecture at Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) and boasts a long professional trajectory as a founding partner of several architectural firms alongside architects such as Pedro Azara, Manuel Arenas, Manuel Gausa and Montserrat Torras. Between 1993 and 2006 he was part of ACTAR Arquitectura, a multidisciplinary architecture studio linked to the publishing world and the field of photography, tasked with organising the Metápolis Advanced Architecture Festival. In terms of his academic career, he has taught at the ETSAB and UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, as well as having collaborated with international teaching institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Monterrey School of Architecture, the Scuola di Architettura in Genoa, the New Jersey School of Architecture and the Boston Architectural College.

Izaskun Chinchilla is an architect who studied at the Higher Technical School of Architecture, part of the Technical University of Madrid, where she won the prize for the best academic transcript of her year and a distinction for her final project. She is the author of the doctoral thesis La Estructura de la Revolución Ecológica en Arquitectura (‘The structure of the ecological revolution in architecture’), in which she addresses the profound application of the principles of ecology to architecture, supervised by architect Iñaki Ábalos and sociologist Emilio Luque. She applies this new approach to architecture both in her academic and professional practice at the helm of her studio Izaskun Chinchilla Architects. She is a full professor of Architectural Practice at the Bartlett School of Architecture (University College of London) and has lectured at numerous academic centres in Spain and abroad. She has received RIBA recognition as an honorary foreign member and is the author of the book La ciudad de los cuidados (‘The city of care’).

Foros is an annual series of lectures on architecture and urban planning, which this year is held under the title “The leap into the void”. This new series calls for self-awareness regarding architecture today in its different aspects and fields of application. As a new feature, the lecture series is introducing a new format based on a two-way dialogue between professionals from the sector who will partake in sessions structured by themes linked to current architectural practice and the challenges facing the sector.
