Integrative dentistry takes a whole-person approach to patient care. Rather than focusing solely on the oral cavity, it also considers its connections with the gut, brain and lifestyle.
In this programme, participants will develop an in-depth understanding of the oral microbiota as a dynamic ecosystem that not only affects oral health (e.g. dental caries, periodontitis and other infections) but also systemic conditions through the oral-gut-brain axis. The programme also examines the role of lifestyle – nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress – in maintaining a balanced oral microbiota and its relationship with oral and general health, promoting sustainable lifestyle changes as a foundation for integrated prevention, diagnosis and treatment. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach. Alongside conventional diagnosis, it explores comprehensive intervention strategies based on treatment plans that integrate dentistry, nutrition, clinical psychoneuroimmunology and behaviour change. As a result, participants acquire the tools necessary to design personalised treatment protocols that address the patient’s oral biology (oral microbiome, biofilm and immune response) while also taking into account lifestyle factors such as stress and sleep patterns. The course places a strong emphasis on early prevention and the integration of diagnosis and treatment, guided by a whole-person perspective.
Upon completion, participants will be able to interpret the oral microbiota within its systemic context, assess how lifestyle habits contribute to oral health and disease and develop interdisciplinary treatment plans that connect oral health with the patient’s overall health.
